Just saw the froch thread, concensus was froch would get ko'd bad and don't even question it. But how would jesus do?
lol Gerald defiantly hits a lot harder than Kenny Kost and Darnell Boone. Easy nights work early devastating knockout.
Ward may give away the first couple of rounds but would simply adjust to anything McClellan has. Frankly McClellan wasn't a good enough fighter to be talked about over 15 years after his retirement. Ward UD.
His power was the stuff of nightmares but as a boxer he had a lot of flaws tha tcould be exploited if you could avoid the bombs.
holy **** there is some real gman love on here  come on lads name a great fighter gman outboxed ? fair enough he usually knocked them out,but i only see 3 maybe 4 world class boxers on his record and one of them, benn who was past his best(as was jackson and mugabi),beat him, benn is the best on his record and benn beat him,why all the love:think
G-Man's best wins (only notable wins) were over faded, straight on, naturally smaller guys. One of then, Benn, he didn't finish. I agree with ApatheticLeader 100%. Some stylistic matchups favour McLellan but he's not the H2H beast nor the 'lost great' he's often made out to be. I cringe when people describe him as multi-faceted for displaying basic boxing skills against a half blind Jackson. He gets a lot of air time because he was a fan friendly knockout artist, very famous and benefits from Rose tinted spectacles. G-Man was a big guy, he had an iron chin (don't know how it would've held up against men the same size as him mind you, would've taken him a while to get to cruiserweight I imagine though) and some real raw power, but was basic and straight up. Hardly a big Kronk Arguello in terms of boxer punchers. He might well blast Ward, but I'd favour Ward to be able to survive for a few rounds before ad******g to spoil against McLellan as he gets more and more frustrated, does his Chang-esque octopus game and makes Gerald look worse than him. Ward, 116-112/115-113 type decision in an extremely ugly fight down the stretch. As for McLellan's strength negating Ward's tricky, clever and smothering inside game and their respective handspeed, even with Ward needing to take the last round off with Froch he has the more economic style here and I'd favour G-Man being the more tired of the two later on. Although with Ward's lack of dig even if the Benn version of McLellan turns up he goes the distance and probably doesn't get injured. But Ward is smart enough not to get crushed early on. -Mugabi; eye ****ed, chin destroyed, abandoned Kampala schooling. There to waste. -Jackson; going blind, incredible puncher, much smaller, past best. Very competitive 'til finish. Those are the two best wins on McLellan's resume. If Ward retired tomorrow he'd have surpassed McLellan by miles already. Different levels and although admittedly not the easiest styles clash to get to grips with, I give the benefit to the more consistent performer and proven stylist. He's faced limit bangers before and not been crushed, it'd be much tougher against G' than it would against Abraham, Bika and Froch, but I give Ward the benefit of the doubt. Unless we say the Boone knockdown was not Because he was still maturing physically and technically and say G-Man's offensive prowess levels it out and he can land a similar shot to much greater effect. I rarely analyse a hypothetical matchup with a 'punchers chance' shout but that's all you can give to Gerald here IMHO.
flea i give froch the better record now, fought and beat better fighters in there prime than gman ever fought. he has a punchs chance against any man from middle to lightheavy, absulutly no doubt about it,but being able to outbox them all,no chance. The more i think about it the more i see froch beating him,i have never known a boxer like froch who is so underated on a boxing forum,****ing weird
I agree 100% in terms of legacy widdy, Froch takes it for me. But given some of his attributes it's easy to see why he isn't the easiest guy to think of running the gauntlet, even though he's done it!!! He's just too slow and hittable to pick him with much confidence. Not just when he's pitted against old timers; I've picked against him (my favourite active fighter no doubt) in every big fight he's had And not just through nerves, he continues to dumbfound and amaze with what he can force of himself onto a fight, but he has some serious stylistic fallacies that deny him the chance to be one of 'those' stylists that you could barely find an opponent you'd be happy to pick to beat him. A top level guy that gives anyone hassle that he's in there with as long as he still has fight in him. But you could say the same for say, Yaqui Lopez.
Cool, another easy stoppage over a faded, naturally smaller straight on fighter for McLellan then :good
**** off, shoulda coulda wouldaatsch he fell out the ropes, got back in(maybe a little late) was fine and bobbed and weaved his way outa trouble and out punched the puncher :hey
I know! What as I up to? :huh Thanks for making sure everyone knows and doesn't take my spelling as gospel :good
Hi Big Phil. I would have to go for Ward on points. Ward won't trade with G-Man. Only a mad possessed like Benn would (I mean that as a compliment by the way).
