Anyone else notice how many controversial decisions there have been involving German fighter's? Those bad decisions seem to go both ways for and against depending on location in lot of cases. I'm not saying all were bad decisions but it seems like we have seen some really questionable ones over the years. Also seems like a lot of the German fighter's have that similar upright boxing style with an emphasis on working behind a high guard with mostly straight punches and a lot of movement. It's a style that is not really appreciated by casual fans who mostly KO's or more of a brawling style. Axel Schulz-- robbed against Foreman in a fight that he should have won the lineal heavyweight championship of he world. Arguably screwed aginst Botha and lost a close decision to Moorer on German soil. The guy could not catch a break. Felix Sturm-- lost his Middleweight title to a sluggish Golden Boy in a fight that just about everyone thought he won. Retained his title against both Randy Griffin and Fedor Chundov in fights that most observers though he lost. Henry Maske-- lost a close decision to Virgil Hill. I actually thought Hill won that one but it was close. Sven Ottke--- was on the good side of a many questionable decisions. Ried, Johnson, Brewer, Mitchell and Lawson. Very good smart fighter that is very polarizing. Max Schmeling--- a lot of folks thought he won his 2nd fight with Jack Sharkey. Lost a close decision. Markus Beyer-- I though Eric Lucas clearly beat him. I don't recall seeing the Bika or Green fights but I remember there was controversy. I'm sure I have left some other fights out.
Good post! I need to rewatch some of those fights. I started this post after watching Shultz vs Foreman earlier today for the first time since I watched 8t live and realize that Shultz fully deserved to have his name listed as a lineal heavyweight champion. We always read about how German fighters are protected in Germany but after what happened to Axel and Felix, can you blame certain guys for not wanting to fight outside of Germany?
It's merely an entire nation's passive-aggressive attempt at revenge for losing horrifically in two world wars.
Hi @Ra's Al-Ghul - I have to say I don't remember there being a hint of controversy over the Tzsyu-Urkal result. Iirc it was a good, competitive fight but with a clear winner in Tzyu. I'll have to rewatch it to score it myself to see though.
