German Torres KO9 Eleoncio Mercedes (video: WAR!!!)

Whether you're a fan of the lower weights or not this rarely talked of scrap is worth a watch for any discerning fight fan. It's violent, dramatic, sometimes chaotic, and has a very aesthetically pleasing blend of styles as well.

Eleoncio Mercedes, a Dominican Olympian with a Panamanian style IMO, matched ridiculously tough, jumps on the lineal title train down at flyweight when everyone is getting to sleep with the belt for a few months it seems. Mercedes, unlike Frank Cerdeno and Koji Kobayashi, was a quality operator. Too hittable and not masses of power, but he was a cultured fighter who had a variety of punches with both hands and slipped shots well with upper body movement.

Not enough that he wasn't in exciting fights, as anyone who has seen his war with Charlie Magrie will attest to.

As for German Torres, more known as a light fly, he'd fought Chang once before this fight took place (and Zapata early on in his career) and here he is at his bulldozing best IMO, more experienced, a hurtful pressure fighting and power punching game in a traditional Mexican vain, and tough as old boots, if not without some very hairy moments in this one.

Considering Mercedes was a big Fly, it shows how much of a force Torres was and also reminds us again how redundant some of the lower weight classes are. A few fights later the Mexican got his rematch with Chang, a lethargic Chang at his absolute worst and couldn't put him away or even convincingly beat him IMO. Again, Chang=G.O.A.T.

I had no idea what this fight would be like when I purchased it and did so only because I was eager to watch more of these two, and was pleasantly surprised. It's a screamer! Mercedes, despite having a **** load of losses and nearing the end of his career, comes to win and gives a good account of himself. Torres is a monster. Have never seen anyone mention it before so I'm declaring it an UNDERRATED CLASSIC ;-)
