I agree with a lot of your points here (i think, lol). I really like the lighting German shows use, effects etc., and that big Blue Light that's over ring center, with usually white mat looks really good for viewing.

I don't know if I agree with your assessment of the crowds though. I was VERY impressed by the fact that the crowd last weekend not only applauded L. Simon as he was announced and entered the ring, but they also LOUDLY applauded the US National Anthem....in thier OWN "house".:yep

IMO, those fans showed PURE CLASS that is rare to see anywhere in the world.

LOL... I had posted this before reading the whole thread. Very interesting to see how some like the "show" but not the crowd, some like the crowd but not the "show", etc...

I also appreciate how some of the German Channels provide FREE and LEGAL streams available to world wide audiences, like the one I was able to watch A. Abraham on last weekend. :good

ProSieben broadcasts fights as well (Spotlight's "Fight Nights" aka Universum events).

I'm talking more about during the fight. They don't make a lot of noise and seem content to sit and observe (which of course, isn't a bad thing). I just think a loud raucous crowd adds to that big fight atmosphere.

There's no need for that. English is a mandatory subject from the fifth grade on and every successful German businessman speaks English fluently.

As far as I know german ticket prices are lower than in some other countries, but I'm not sure about that. Add the fact that PPV isn't very popular and you know why the real big events still end up in the us.

Most of the people in the crowd can't relate to a lot of the fighters, because the major tv networks sometimes don't broadcast their fights. The main event is often the only fight which is shown live and the fighters on the undercard are lucky if their fights are broadcasted afterwards when most of the people have switched to other channels.

Btw the white ring isn't a german thing. It's only used for Klitschko fights. I guess it's because of their sponsor.

Boxing is big in europe,,,,america got wwf, mma, all your pro an college sports,,boxing does not have that comp in europe,,,,,HBO pretty much subsudize, mayweather, jone, hopkins, to name a few, these guys can't sell out more then a few thousand seats (unless of course there fighting a boxer with a big following),,,Now there is gatti, a dlh an few more names that sell 10,000 seat stadiums, but i sure there is about 20 to 30 boxer in europe that can do that. To bad europe dosn't set up more PPV in US, I sure boxing fans would buy what they felt was good,,,,,,,I like to by a sturm or abraham fight, i like kessler, he be fun to watch, rather pay to see him then DLH

let me rephrase that into 2 distinct questions:

    1. What is the fight that if we were only considering fights in Germany would have won fight of the year? (or rather in this case fight of the 5 years)

    2. What is the fight staged in Germnay in the last five years that had the highest overall level of ability in the ring?

You don't have to answer these questions. They are pretty much rhetorical. The answer is that Germany is not the hotbed of boxing.

It is however the hotbed of heavyweight boxing since LL retired.

For boxing in general, UK > Germany, and USA is still numero uno

Name those champs who travelled to Germany where they got robbed of their title fighting for peanuts!

Erdei, for example, dethroned Gonzalez fair and square. Actually,he gave him a lesson in boxing almost winning every round of their encounter.
And to carry off the prize Gonzalez had won the title by a very contrversial point decision over DM ...............on German soil .......in DM's backyard.

Anyway! Money is still the name of this game! A pro fighter will even fight in hell if the money is right!
Do you really think that an American or American world champ will stay at home defending his title if he has the chance to collect a really big paycheck on GErman soil?
Nah! Numerous American or American world champs have travelled to GErmany to defend their titles there over the last couple of years.

Wlad earned around 13.500.000€=18.000.000$ for his title defence against Thompson in Germany.
I very much doubt that all the money is in the USA.Why the hell fights Brewster out of Germany for a German promoter then? And why was a heavy like McCline begging for a contract with a German promoter?
Nah! Germany is a rich country where an average fighter whose name isnt De la Hoya or Mayweather can collect bigger checks than over there in the usa.

explain yourself. Hatton had 1.4 million PPV buys in the UK and over 20 thousand came to see him fight Kostya Tszyu, while Calzaghe had 55K people to see him fight Kessler.

I don't see where Germany is competitng with these kinds of numbers (free TV is nothing like PPV), this kind of talent, or these kind of quality fights

Good thing you have Vitali cause apart from that you've got nothing. Even Abraham fought Miranda in the USA the 2nd time around, when Miranda was actually a name.
