He would have done a lot better if not for his hand problems.

Gerrie Coetzee was a good, solid and honest fighter. Honest in the sense that he wasn't afraid to take on any top fighter and always gave it his all. Pity, he lost most of the big ones.

Is he underrated? The answer is a big YES as far as I am concerned.

I think Coetzee could have been so much more than he was..I suspect head problems...as in confidence problems..as much as any problems physically. He was just spectaclular..so impressive in that Spinks ko...I remember me and my boxing buddies being just blown away. I think yes...he was indeed underrated.

I thought while Coetzee was strong early against Tate, Tate throughly outboxed Coetzee and was backing him up for most of the fight. Against Weaver though....Coetzee only needed to land one more big punch in round 8 and he would of won the title.

Six of one, half a dozen of the other. The trio of surgeries on his right hand, and "corrective items" implanted into it, are what led to it being labeled as "bionic." It was modern medicine, not inborn genetic nature or extensive training, which resulted in it becoming such a dangerous punch. If he'd never had hand problems, maybe he wouldn't have developed the punch that he did, in which case we might never would have heard of him in the first place. (If I was rich, and an aspiring boxer, I might opt to have titanium inserted into my hands. Eventually, some slimeball may incorporate that idea.)

From these stats it is obvious he is not underrated. If anything he is slightly overrated .

Coetzee had confidence issues when he was young ,and was intimidated by the black US fighters, they worked on his jab and developing a left hook and he became a much more rounded fighter. I only saw him briefly in the flesh ,he came for a pay day against Bruno and went out in the first, but a capable fighter in his day ,he would liven up a poor division if he were around today.

The Snipes fight got voted "highway robbery of the year" but i thought the Thomas draw was perfecto.

i also think he peaked psychically in the dokes fight. he didn't have the muscles he did before.

Stick to your guns - Snipes ***** style and overall A+ weirdness make him a difficult customer to assess. Many a fight he barely committed to a punch but when he actually did he had fine power. No average puncher could ever drop Holmes the way he did and hurt Berbick badly. I can understand the contrary opinion in that Snipes was inconsistent and pissweak his true power is clouded.

    Poor Gerrie.

SEVERE lack of confidence most of his career then Jackie McCoy resurrects his left hand (He had a fine one early career before his bones were fused in the right hand turning it into a massive KO weapon leading to severe neglect of the left paw) at the same time Dokes goes off the rails via white powder. Gerrie's greatest ever performance is nullified when the rarely motivated Greg Page turns it on bigtime in Gerrie's backyard to brutally KO him. Never really figured after this.

He did peak in the Dokes fight imo. He actually fought superbly vs Page but Greg's superb chin soaked up many massive right hands and he gave back even more than he took.

Gerrie is probably a bit underrated, but he had no business losing to Iran Barkely, should be ashamed of himself.

Dude. He was 42, had fought 4 times in 11 years, and oh yeah, had gotten burned to a crisp in a fire on his farm. He had been past-it 11 years before.

Yeah very good HW. He was highly thought of back then but rarely gets a mention these days.
