Their careers overlapped but these two never met. I see Coetzee winning lots of rounds, but with a strong chance of getting taken out late by a surging Bonecrusher. What do you pathetic geeks with nothing better to do with your time think?

    Coetzee.

Much the faster hands. Smith just threw those long hard shots but they'd be wide hooks from both hands and he needed about half the ring to launch them. Once opponents got inside that range or if they turned him, he was not in position to throw. And Bonecrusher was a guy that got confused in the ring when things were competitive or he wasn't on top. Smart outside the ring but not so much in the ring during the bout. That stuff would cost him against Coetzee.

Late tko. I always wanted to see Smith in there with Cooney.

If we're considering the best versions of these two fighters, I've got to go with Coetzee. I think it would be ludicrous to assume that the impotent runt Marvis Frazier and the uber-chinless Michael Moorer among others, could take the mettle of and defeat Smith and a big, talented, hard hitting guy like Gerrie Coetzee, though admittedly a head case, could not. I believe that ala the Spinks bout, Coetzee would be capable of unleashing some first round thunderbolts that would overwhelm Smith,...but the more likely scenario would be a more patient approach, as in the title winning Dokes bout, where a methodical lacing featuring Gerrie's undersung left hook, setting up the Bionic right hand would catch, wear down and finally dispatch the Bonecrusher. All of this, of course, would be contingent upon Gerrie having one of his good nights...with his head case problems nowhere around. Anyhow, I'd predict an 11th round tko ...or even a knockout for Gerrie Coetzee.

    Yep.

But Smith was a headcase in his own way as well. When he was out of his comfort zone, he was way out of his comfort zone. He'd go opposite ends of the spectrum instead of just some small steps. A completely different fighter.

He was a classic textbook guy what Manny Steward always talked about with mental energy in the ring. He didn't have it and he'd use up whatever he did have quick. And it'd fatigue him almost as much as the physical fatigue factor. Once that sets in, that quick right hand of Coetzee's lands clean. And that was a nasty punch to absorb.

I'd favor Coetzee with Bonecrusher having a punchers chance late in the fight if it's 12 or 15 rounds.

At his best I'd have to go with Coetzee.

Some have pointed out that Gerrie had some head problems and that was true. His own ****ing father of all people used to have a morbid fatalism about Coetzee's chances and always seemed to predict that Gerrie was about to get knocked out. This was more problematic than it may seem to overseas guys, because Afrikaans culture is heavily patriarchal and a father's opinion is law. Thanks dad, for the confidence booster

Coetzee was special when he was on song, but he seemed to find it hard to get worked up to that level.

He may also have been much better if he hadn't gotten embroiled in two total wars with a local guy called "Tank" Schutte (5'10, 260lb and it wasn't all fat either the dude was STRONG) and bust his hands to bits on Tank's impervious dome. There's a video of that slugfest here:

Anyway, some context and information :)

Coetzee by decision. In his prime, only James Broad floored Bone and Tony hat was with a body shot. Smith would rattle Gerrie a few times, but Gerrie had
    more skills. 9-6 decision.
