    Doug Jones for a smaller heavyweight did give then Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali) a tough controversial scoring bout on March 13 1963 in Madison Square Garden. Jones would lose on points to WBA Champion Ernie Terrell in June 1966 on points in 15 rounds. Later contender Joe Frazier would stop Jones on Feb 21 1967.

    If Cooney could meet Ali's title reign opposition- Lewiston Liston, Battle of the Bad Backs with Floyd, Lantern Jaw London, and the budget Mike Weaver, even the cocaine whiskey diet version should do just fine.

    Ernie 'Octupussy' Terrell could cause the stoned Gerry some problems. Then a time travelling Jimmy Young would break off his gig with The Supremes and take over from where 'Octupussy' left off.

    I think Cooney could have beaten a lot of the contenders back then. A prime sonny Liston would beat him but given the parameters of the thread Liston wouldn’t be prime in this scenario. Still a long bridge to cross. But I think Gerry would be a contender for sure

    The only thing that Ernie Terrell had going for him was his mauling and wrestling style, he was 6"6, 215, Ernie also possessed a long left jab. I felt that Terrell's height, reach and wrestling tactics would have caused Gerry Cooney some problems. Before Muhammad Ali fought Terrell for the undisputed World Heavyweight Title on Feb 6 1967, Ali was taught some wrestling tactics in training to prepare for Terrell's tactics.
