Could an agressive Cooney with above-average boxing skills and excellent power penetrate the wicked jab and do damage to Klitschko? Or would Cooney follow his pattern of being a failure against top-notch comp - Holmes, Spinks, Foreman. Remember though - this is the Cooney of 1980-81' who easily beat Young, Lyle, Norton.

Cooney..no version of him, period would have been able to beat Wlad Klitschko...W.K. would have ko'ed him in 5. Wlad would have boxed his ears off before dispatching him.

I think this is a 50/50. Both have poor chins, but both hit very hard. Cooney's left hook could definitely knock Wlad out, but Wlad could also nail Cooney before he gets tagged hard.

I don't know if Cooney was brave enough to try to get past Wlad's jab and right hand.

Although it's an interesting fight due to Cooney's height and monster left hook, I have to side with Wlad.
It's a shame that most of the top contenders today aren't big punchers, Wlad still has some questions to answer imo. He needs Haye in order to prove to me that he has improved against punchers. He's definitely shown that if you don't have a big punch you're in for a long night but there's still a ? with his durability/panic attacks. No one has been able to push him to a point where he has to dig deep however in quite a few years.

Wlad ko's Cooney early in my judgement.

Given Wlad's chin questions, Cooney has a puncher's chance. I just don't he could take advantage of it.

Wlad isn't knocking anyone out early, lately. Considering a simply horrible Rahman who was somewhat chinny to begin with lasted as long as he did, I don't see Wlad blasting out the young undefeated Gerry Cooney within a few rounds.
If he's not going for the kill against guys like Eddie Chambers, Rahman, and Chagaev when it's fairly obvious that they pose no threat, he's not going to against a 6'7 Gerry Cooney who has one of the hardest left hooks ever.

this is a very close fight ,cooney had a pretty decent jab so the wlad easily outboxes cooney thing i dont buy. wlad is to cautious to ko him early if there is an early ko i would think cooney would be favoured to score it, the longer the fight went the more i would lean toward wlad, after the 9th i would take a wlad stoppage win,

but here this week i would risk the wrath of the forum and go for a cooney ko4 win

Honestly I think Cooney would lose this fight at the staredown he just was not mentally tough enough. It would be a good scrap for 3 or 4 rounds.

I understand those picking Wlad...but not those picking him early! He gave Holmes a tough competitive fight, before being stopped in 13!

Now Cooney if he was transplanted from then untill today (or a few years ago) would still have the same question marks over his head...what is his stamina like can he go the full 12 (15 w/Holmes but 12 today)? I think although he was tiring against Holmes he didn't struggle to much to last 12 with him. I don't really see Wlad being this destructive force that Cooney will just wilt before???

I see wlad controlling the action, limiting the power chances of Cooney and coasting to a solid UD...But not sure why so many see an early end to Cooney at the hands of IRON WLAD!

It's impossible to predict this 1 because Wladmir could easily get floored by a left hook and Cooney could get picked off by a Wladmir right hand... but otherwise i would say Wladmir wins this by UD

Although anything could happen, I think the most likely outcome to this match is a Wladimir Klitschko win by decision.

The Wlad who got blitzed by Corrie Sanders back in early 2003 might have lost to Cooney. Although Cooney was not as quick as Sanders so even that would seem unlikely. The super-conservative, take no chances Wlad of today would simply not let Cooney get too close. So I would see about an 8th round stoppage victory for Klitschko.
