Interesting as Wlad would not have a height and reach advantage for once and would be facing a monster puncher. Wlad is the better boxer with massive power of his own but because of Wlads chin it could go either way, I'd favour the better boxer in Wlad but Cooney is a very live threat

cooney was a serious contender at least as good as many of the lost generation of heavyweight belt holders. He came up against a real heavyweight champion who had to use all his powers to overcome cooney even though cooney wasnt corectly sesoned and had only had 1 round of active fighting in 20 months. The loss to holmes devestated gerry and he never fullfiled his potential.
wlad did fullfill his potential. wlad untilised a succesful catious style that would be neutralised by cooneys dimentions. I think the cooney that fought holmes would be too much for wlad. I dont think wlad is beter than Holmes even if he would be succesful against most of Holmes's oppponents. If sam peter can put him over so can cooney.

Wlad would most likely win by mid-to-late round stoppage, but if Gerry catches him early, he's in for a serious coldcocking of the Cooney kind.

Wladdy Klit of 2006 to 2010 hammers Cooney of 1980 to '81 in wicked fashion... Cooney is powerful and dangerous for the first FOUR solid rds, but then fades and takes a beating enroute to being stopped inside 10 rds...

Cooney was a physically talented but limited fighter who got pushed too soon for the big cash out. I don't think his raw power is enough to overcome a fighter as smart and polished as the current version of Wlad. He would be stopped in deep water as he was against Holmes.

    My head says Klitschko.

But I've just got this nagging feeling that Cooney makes him panic at some point and then capitalises to score a KO.

Wlad's victories with the exception of Peter have come against non-punchers, so Cooney presents an interesting challenge. I think its pretty clear that Wladimir is simply far more skilled.

While Gerry was able to hang with Holmes (who to an extent carried him a few rounds) Wlad's right hand carries enough power to stop him sooner. Unless Gerry presses the action and can assert himself I have a hard time seeing how he overcomes Klitschko's jab and subsequent right hand.

Bottom line: Wlad is far more reliable a fighter and has the temperament and defense to sustain Cooney's attacks more so than the other way around. Wlad stops him in about 7-8 rounds.

Wlad should surely be given the benefit of the doubt here, given the huge disparity between their ring acomplishments.

Cooney is a live threat unlike most of Wladimir's opponents but I would favour the more proven man in Klitschko.

    NOTE:

Wlad Klit of 2006 to 2010 is way more solid and confident in his skills, etc... Klit has never **** himself in a fight over the last 4 yrs.... He's found his place in the ring and in ring history...

Interesting one this. Depends which Cooney turns up - Spinks & Foreman, Wlad all the way - Holmes version, different story.

I always say about Wlad, he's had 50 odd pro bouts, but only 6 or 7 pro FIGHTS...there is a difference.

Cooney fought Holmes...for me Wlad is nowhere near that standard as a hard-bitten, spiteful fighter...and Holmes took 13 rounds to do the job.

Also depends who is the bravest on the night. Wlad plays it safe I feel cos he doesn't have great confidence in his chin...he could be terrified against a puncher like Cooney. Cooney knew he was up against a top, top proven champion in Holmes...with Wlad, Cooney KNOWS he has a major league puncher's chance.

Against Wlad, Gerry knows he really is one shot away from rendering Wlad ripe for the kill. Fighter's chins don't tend to get better...if they don't get kayoed for a while, it's usually because other aspects of their game, i.e. defence have improved, or they've been matched safer. I think it's a bit of both in Wlad's case. I think Wlad is more vulnerable than Cooney.

I have a hunch Cooney kayoes Wlad in about 3-4 rounds.

  14. wladimir by ko, but cooney would have a little chance with his hitting power, the chin of wlad is bad and the cooney´s is bad too.

    Esentialy, yes.

Historians will have to recognise Wlads title run whether they like the era or not!
