Can't deny that. That's why I said he was the best fighter to face Holmes who wasn't Spinks. Norton got destroyed. I think a prime Norton wouldn't have been gone in one round, but I think even then Cooney could have pulled a come-from-behind Marciano KO on Norton in his prime being down on the cards. Cooney could have been a belt holder in this era. Hell, if he had just challenged Coetzee or Weaver back then, he could have been.
And he would have beaten both IMHO. I think he would have been a perfect HW to throw in a mix now. With his crazy power, sound boxing skills and he is huge man. The Klits would be the one doing a Haye duck right now. I love Gerry, being from NYC, this guy has done so much for boxing. A true gentle giant.
cooney was a ny golden gloves champion....some bad ass fighters in NY....dude knew how to fight....his problem...he didnt have the killer mentality...he was too damn nice. his nickname should have been "gentleman" oh wait...it was
I didn't notice that when he was carrying on punching Norton when Norton was unconscious! Cooney could have won a belt in most eras. Pity all the great white hope stuff drowned out what a good fighter he was.
WTF atsch Are you for real dude? Cooney did get a shot, and he was in his peak way before Tyson was in the trials. Cooney fought Holmes in 82(His peak) when Tyson was like 15,16. You rate him over Shavers cause he had anvil for hands but no technique?atsch And Shavers arguably the hardest puncher ever didnt have anvil in his hands. Dude your severly lacking in any knowledge of the sport, go do your homework before posting stupid **** like this. Also nothing wrong with Cooneys technique he had underrated skils, contrary to what most will have you believe he was competetive with Holmes for most of the bout until the championship rounds.
Actually once the bell rang he had great killer instinct just watch some of his highlight kos he went all out. His problem was getting motivated to make fights,he was to inactive and wasted a good portion of his career sitting on his ass.
Cooney was a damn fine fighter. Basically two things happened. 1) His path to the title shot was a bit to soft. 2) He had to face an ATG heavyweight in Larry Holmes.
