he was very underrated i think he had one of the best left hooks in the division and for a big man had good movement when it came to stepping to the side to throw the hook i think his only downfall was not throwing his right hand more:think
In terms of ability, he sometimes gets sold short and written off as someone who would fall to anyone who even had so much as a heart beat. As far as name recognition though, I'd say that he's been hyped quite a bit over the past 30 years. For a man who defeated less than 30 opponents and never really chalked up a win over a solid contender in his prime, we hear a bit too much about him. Trevor Berbick for example, was a better fighter from the same period, who beat a much wider array of talent, took Holmes the distance and even captured a title, but he's rarely discussed around here.
One of his downsides to him was he didn't really use his right hand yes, but he didn't have very good defense or a good chin..
bang on cooney is over talked about, i agree with the TS. he didn't do anything other than being in the biggest money fight ever up to that time still, losing to holmes and a blown up light heavy while chalking up 2 wins over corpses of very great fighters doesn't win many legacy points
Pity Sugar Nikolay Valuev wasn't in the ring with Holmes in 82' and Spinks in 87', because he would have mopped the floor with both of them..
