i normally dont start threads like this...but i was thinking about this one... if their chins held up, i imagine their styles would gel. the damiani from the mercer fight showed good skills and a good chin {maybe not a good nose though}, but that was a top notch version of mercer.. cooney at his best was damn good. whatta ya think ??
damiani may just edge this one over ten rounds, but if Cooney lands that left hook of his in the first three, it's lights out for Diamiani.
Could be a potentially entertaining match, but frankly I like Cooney better.. Both men had shaky chins and their boxing skills were probably at about the same level, but Cooney had the physical tools to impose himself on Damiani to a greater extent. I see Gerry taking this one by stoppage, but Francesco might have made it competitive.
He had his nose broken by the only real direct shot that Ray Mercer was able to land on him, while Guys like Odum, Cooper, Jones and several others took numerous shots of the same magnitude. He was busted up pretty badly by Oliver McCall who could certainly crack, but was no elite hitter. Neither of those guys had Cooney's power, and nor did they have the kind of reach that Gerry had. The punch that Mercer used to break Damiani's nose, was a left hook, and Ray was primarily a right handed guy, whereas Cooney had a far more established left. I don't see Damiani outboxing Cooney in one sided fashion for 8 rounds the way that he did against Mercer.. Gerry's reach, left hook, boxing ability and greater power would prevent that from happening.
Its been literally 20 years since I've seen that fight, but I seem to remember, the one punch being the only FLUSH shot that he landed, and again, it was a left hook that did the job ( not a punch that was a signature shot for Mercer. ) In any event, I think Cooney hit harder, had better landing mechanisms, and Damiani was not exactly an iron-chinned fighter.... We can argue all day about technicalities, but in the end, I think Cooney should be favored.
well...you're kinda making my response for me...that was his nose...not his chin.....it was a freak type of injury, damiani said later that his whole mouth and throat filled with blood and he couldnt breathe properly at all......i wouldnt give that as an example of a shaky chin.
Okay, then let's eliminate arguments about the specifics of facial anatomy... He got knocked out with one punch that broke his nose... Cooney was never stopped by only a SINGLE punch.. If you think that the Mercer example was irrelevant. Then let's just drop Cooney's losses to Spinks and Foreman on the basis that he was an inactive opponent who's best years were behind him...
Cooney would stop Damiani. I lived through the "Damiani" era. It wasn't as impressive then as it seems to be now.
Agreed, his record looks better on boxrec than his actual abilities in the ring were, with his losing effort to Mercer being quite possibly one of his better showings.
I agree with you that cooney would win. but it was more of a left uppercut that caught damiani in a very weird angle. it's not like cooney would be landing that kind of shot, I don't think so anyways and mercer was definitely landing some heavy shots on damiani before the knockout Cooney wouldve probably won by stoppage.
