Tim couldn't come in there like he did in bonecrusher2, the Tim that fought Holmes kicks gerrys ass all night and gets a ko, I see that Tim as kind of a Jimmy young with much greater one punch ko power. Tim has a good chin, a focused Tim has his way with cooney

Spoon would kill Cooney if focused and well tuned, etc..... Cooney was never the skilled fighter Spoon was when he was trained properly..... Spoon KO's Cooney inside 7 rds after breaking Cooney down...

Ay vrsion of Witherspoon but the one that Bonecrusher cumbled would be too much for Cooney...all night long.

I think they brought in Witherspoon as a sparing partner for the Holmes fight and he was sent home after a week because he was kicking Cooney's ass in sparring.

Hey! Cooney didn't have the skillet that spoon and Holmes had, but he was competitive with Larry deep into the fight. He wasn't a bad fighter, and had great power. I don't think his head was ever right after the Holmes asskicking he got, then the whining, remember that. But he was damn good and dangerouse

Spoon wasted his talent.....but Don King didn't help the situation out either.

Spoon was kinda like Riddick Bowe....a true "what could have been".

Other than the Bonecrusher rematch, 'Spoon was nails.

Cooney would get his ass handed to him. The way Tim threw would be too unorthodox for the basic Cooney to deal with, and he'd get beat up.

Both at their best,Witherspoon easily beats Cooney. Outboxes him and stops him late.

Tim would win, although the Bonecrusher fight was shocking. A heck of a fight is Bonecrusher vs. Cooney and I almost pick Bonecrusher. Not a great fight for Cooney, even though Marvis Frazier beat Bonecrusher and Cooney would beat Marvis.

I recall waking up and watching Witherspoon-Smith II on the recording British Tv shown of it. I was totally shocked,as a lot were. Especially as Tim pitched a shutout over 'Bonecrusher' in their first fight the previous year.

I was surprised also. I remember Bonecrusher almost chopping him down with those slow right hands. Tim was just not right for that fight. Interesting thing is I always thought Tim had the style to beat Tyson. He was big and had a good chin and a good punch, and had he won that fight he would have fought Tyson in March the day Tyson fought Bonecrusher since I remember this was some sort of elimination fight to get an undisputed champion by August of 1987.

Have to favor Spoon in this one. He was an all-around solid fighter with skills developed on his way up. Cooney was big, strong, with a devastating left hook and was always dangerous. But Cooney didn't have the right kind of fights coming up that would develop the skills needed when he found himself in deep water. It is to his credit that he did as well as he did against Holmes, as it was evident early on that he just wasn't quite ready for the likes of Larry Holmes. Had he been developed more thoroughly on the way up, his career may have turned out quite differently. Spoon was more developed and ready when he got to the big time.
