1987..Cooney on comeback had a couple of wins v Ty unbeaten 15-0 (pre tyson fight).. Cooney has loads of followers on here...Ty , not so many.. Your views on how this goes...
At this stage in Cooney's career I think Biggs may be able to out box him but even so I still would favor Cooney to get to Biggs with power punches and finish him off. Biggs had a bad tendency to brawl instead of box and against Cooney even at this stage in Cooney's career that could be trouble.
If Cooney shows up against any top contender in 1987 looking the way he did against Spinks, he likely gets beat or at least by most of them.
In 1987 Spinks was no Biggs, if this fight turns into a brawl Biggs in my opinion ends up getting Knocked out.... If Biggs moves and boxes and dosen't trade i think the fight will be very close any mistakes from Biggs and he's hitting the floor... I would put my money on Cooney to stop him...
Cooney would have a punchers chance. But honestly, his conditioning and mental resolve for boxing was at an all time low in 1987. As crazy as it sounds, Gerry was actually in better condition and appeared more focused for his 1990 meeting with George Foreman. Tyrell Biggs was no world beater and was never going to be. But he gave a peak Tyson 7 rounds and came back with a broken collar bone to beat hard punching Jeff Sims. That's more than anything Cooney could claim to have done in years by 1987. Could Cooney have landed something big and taken him out? Sure. But not something I'd bet money on when looking at replays of the Spinks fight.
Biggs had no real heavyweight power so I cant seeing him able to hold Gerry off. I had ringside seats to Cooney-Spinks and I agree with Mr. Magoo Cooney had nothing left but Biggs arsenal was lacking
Cooney always was. Always will be and forever should be considered a gutless bum. Perpetually afraid to fight a real contender in their prime. Only fighting Spinks because he though he had a titty with an easy fight over a ltheavy. This guy really should be forgotten and castigated for his cowardess. PEOPLE BRING HIM UP IN HYPOTHETICAL FIGHTS ONLY BECAUSE OF WHAT THEY WISHED WAS A BRAVE STALLWART CONTENDER WHO FOUGHT ANYONE ANYTIME. HE WAS not THAT WAY. SORRY FOLKS. BUT SCARY GERRY IS A FIGMENT OF YOUR IMAGINATION W/ A GLASS JAW AND AN EVEN BIGGER LACK OF HEART. DIDN'T WANT ANYTHING TO DO W/ THE HRD WORK OF CLIMBING THE LADDER BY FIGHTING THE BEST. A DISGRACE TO THE SPORT AND SPORTS IN GENERAL. THERE IS NO WAY TO DEFEND THIS BUM. I ALWAYS WONDER WHEN HE IS BROUGHT UP IF THE PERSON IS IN HIS FAMILY OR IT IS HIM.
Morlocks.. Hey get off the fence why dont you !! I didnt put him in the matchup cos i think he's great and i certainly don't see him over lunch once every third Sunday... I too think he's over rated..although i think you've gone too far. I would never disrespect any worthwhile boxer by labelling him as a 'bum'. I think the Tyrell who beat Simm Bey Snipes has too much for Cooney...points win ...or if Gerry comes in poor shape..late stopage for Ty. As several have said Ty just didnt have natural power to add to some good skills and plenty of heart.
Any fighter that sits on his butt refusing to fight deserving contenders and basically retires until a small lightheavy wins the crown then jumps into a fight undeservedly. a guy who gets an unearned shot the first time against a great fighter, then absolutely refuses to fight another young contender. Spends the rest of his life blaming others for his cowardess. sees Foreman become popular but look slow in a comback and jumps to fight him in 1990 and gets destoyed yet again in two, I consider a bum. he was a primadonna who did nothing to earn his rewards except be white and have a big overrated punch. How can you defend him. He is and was everything that is wrong in boxing. Contenders fight their way to the top against other tigers and this guy is handed title shots and never ONCE does anything to change his image and prove his courage by fighting a young strong fellow ranked fighter. EVER. NEVER EVER.
For the umpteenth time i say i agree he was totally overrated..beat lyle Norton Young when all 3 were 'shot'...got hyped due to colour of his skin. Still wouldnt call any1 who took Holmes to the latter stages...a bum...he fought for the world title. Also recovered from alchoholism... And set up organization for retired fighters who were broke. What you achieved ?
Quite a lot in this lifetime. As a fighter, Cooney was a pampered, gutless, excusemaking BBBBBBBUUUUUUMMMMMM. You can"t defend his actions or career. As I said, his career highlights EVERYTHING wrong in boxing. Wake up man!
Ok...now i realise i'm communicating with a moron. Yes Cooney...waayyy over rated that was the point of my thread. But bum...no. I fought as an amateur 36 times and wouldnt call any fighter a bum...certainly not a man who took Larry Holmes to the 13th round. You're way off man.
