Cooney was a lot better than average in my opinion. Average fighters don't keep Holmes honest for 12 rounds and change. But as Magoo says, with Cooney there is no 'middle ground' heavyweight to gauge him on. He feasted on over-the-hill names and fought aand lost to a peak Holmes.

I do agree that he could have been better, had he been better managed. Then again, a manager's job is to protect their guy whilst securing a title shot. From that perspective, they succeeded very well.

I saw an old replay of an interview with Gerry Cooney that I'm guessing by the looks of it was sometime in the 90's. He said that both he and his people tried to get fights with premier contenders while waiting in line for the Holmes fight, but both Don King and Bob Arum wouldn't sign him against any of their top horses. Consequently, Gerry remained idle for 13 months until the Holmes fight finally came off. At one point, he was #1 for Weaver's WBA crown, but Arum convinced the WBA to give the shot #4 James Tillis in his stead.. So who was really being protected? Gerry Cooney or everyone else? Not sure what to make of the scenario myself.

If they were trying to secure fights with other contenders but failed, then I guess you can't say that his team did anything wrong. Maybe kept him busier in that time (even against trial horses) but not much else.
Cooney gets a lot of flak, but for a while he was a dangerous guy.

    Agreed,

Whilst its true that in hindsight he had his vulnerabilities, I doubt that's what anyone saw between 1979-1982. He was looking rather menacing in the ring taking out some of those guys on top of being a very large and aggressive man. I've never bought the argument that his people were protecting him like he was a fragile piece of crystal and nor that other top contenders and prospects were absolutely " dying " to get in the ring with him.. Regardless of Norton, Lyle and Young being past it, those were chilling performances and against men who despite their being diminished, had to have at least still been top 20 at the time.

Frazier has been described as a 1 armed fighter, but that is way overstated.
But Cooney really did not often even throw his right.
This was a major flaw, he did not use it for proper defense nor throw enough punch variety, starting with his right seemingly a vestigal organ.

You gotta be able to have it as a follow up threat, if not lead rights, uppercuts...
Why could he not be taught to use it?

I think Biggs was very talented for the boxing. He had a great amateur carrier.
He beat Lennox Lewis and Ángel Milián(B iggs was only 21 years old against Milián) in amateur.
He was fast, skilled but somehow he was an unlucky pro-fighter.
The pro-Biggs beat and could knock Snipes down.It was a remarkable thing
because Snipes has only two losses/48 fights and 336 !!! rounds.
(only the prime Holmes(LTKO11 and) J.L. Gonzalez LTKO10,last Snipes fight) could knock Snipes out.)
    Biggs beat Tillis,Bey,Sims,Ocasio also.
But Biggs was unlucky with this crap cut ko against Damiani.
Honorable mention: Biggs was a brave fighter, his opponents were unbeaten Tyson,
    unbeaten Damiani,unbeaten Mason,unbeaten Bowe,unbeaten Lewis also.
But these fighters beat him by ko.Too bad. I think this is the why his legacy
very weak in pro.He never did one big thing.
I think he was a typical, genetical lanky(ectomorph) tall fighter and he was too fragile for the heavyweight division. It's interesting because some other genetical lanky
    fighters show/showed similar symptoms.Ruddocks'jaw(Tyson fight)(Don't fool you his big muscle mass in his prime!),Golota's skull(Tyson fight),Briggs,Ali,vitali klitschko(skin)
Well, Biggs had problem with his skin, chin and his collarbone also.
Unfortunately the stupid tall lanky/fighter mania creates these problem.
The boxing heavyweight division is/was full of tall guys. And we know
only 4 or 6 Ali,Holmes,Foreman,Lewis -so many say(i don't) vitali and Wladimir- real
successful and great tall fighters from the boxing history. But who talk about the many tall losers?
Unfortunately Biggs is one of them.
