Ruiz tko mid rounds. People here are acting like Ruiz didn't make the heavyweight champion quit and Cooney didn't catch a horrible beating from a blown up light heavyweight.
Ruiz defo didn't make Joshua quit, and Joshua showed more heart in that saga than Ruiz has in his while career. That said, Cooney was warm **** with a left hook. Ruiz has the physicality to force Cooney back and counter his left with overhands and put him to bed. Ruiz KO4 They should give Ruiz a gastric band and Cooney one of his chins.
Gerry would need to land early, if not he's in a world of trouble. Cooney is a similar height to AJ and Joseph Parker who got a hometowner against him. I'd pick Ruiz with a right hand counter over an attempted left hook in the 4th.
Cooney destroys Ruiz in 2-4 rds. Again I see so much hate for Cooney on this site and it's crazy. I would love to know what is really behind that hate. It's as if Cooney before he fought Holmes didn't exist, but everthing after is what count. Why is it that way? Ruiz NEVER looked as good as prime Cooney AT NO POINT IN HIS CAREER! Yet some would actually pick Ruiz to beat prime Cooney? It's on film, watch the fights, Cooney before Holmes looked much better than Ruiz did at any point of his career. Cooneys biggest weakness was his own mind, and feeling like he let every white person in this world down by his loss to Holmes ( And in reality, he didn't want any part in the racial tones forced on him from that fight) after Holmes he became a alcoholic, and lackadaisical about fighting. The weight of the racial tones of that era broke him. But prior to that and during the Holmes fight, the man proved he could fight. Biggest claim to fame was a win over overrated Joshua. Cooney beats Ruiz early. And if Ruiz came in out of shape very early.
I might lean towards Ruiz winning as well, but using Cooney’s loss to Spinks to make that argument is ridiculous
