Interesting thing here is neither fights back very well — they are both good on attack but not so good when an opponent takes the play away and forces them to exchange and mix it up. I think this would actually be fairly cautious but I could see Cooney turning it with a body shot early and Joshua going into his turtle shell. Gerry UD 15.
Joshua is the safe and smart pick IMO, but Cooney wouldn’t be someone for Joshua to take lightly....but if he fights smart and let’s his skill dictate the fight he should win a comfortable decision over 12
Pre Ruiz, against the Cooney of the Norton ft could actually see Gerry winning this. If a guy like porky Ruiz can drop him then Cooney definitely could. But post loss, Joshua actually learned a little unlike Cooney. I'll say Joshua fights a steady, safety type fight and has the excellent Philly says, gets a decision win.
While Cooney has the power to KO Joshua, I suspect Anthony might get to him first and force a stoppage. In reality however, anything can happen if the two get into a heated exchange and one of them tees off before the other.
Joshua is vulnerable to the left hook and Cooney has a great left hook. But Joshua should knock him out anyway. He's just a lot better than Cooney was, which isn't saying much.
Good fight. Joshua is more technically sound. However he is vulnerable to the left hook- both to the body and head. Gerry’s best punch. Could make for a fun fight.
Joshua is way more proven at the elite level. Your first instinct should definitely be to pick Joshua. Having said that, Joshua is vulnerable to a left hook!
I'd have to favor Joshua but Cooney would be a live underdog especially if he gets Joshua hurt. If Andy Ruiz could stop Joshua then Cooney has a chance.
Where this vulnerability to left hook coming from? The speed and combination punching is what caused the loss to Ruiz. I don't see any evidence of this weakness to left hooks
Joshua is definitely the favorite here but Cooney has the answer. All things considered AJ should win. By Knockout.
Andy Ruiz is being spoken of in terms like he's inferior to Cooney. He might've beaten Cooney. He's 1000x more durable. Joshua would basically have a more competitive version of the Pulev fight if it were Gerry.
Off the top of my head, Joshua has beaten at least six men who were ranked in the top ten by Ring, on the day of the fight. Notwithstanding his lapses, that is a very significant run of form.
He did get rocked and buckled from a left hook by Povetkin and Whyte, but I thinks it’s more just his chin being shaky and the fact that both opponents have good left hands
