Daniels was a prime 25 years old 8th ranked heavy when Williams convincingly beat him on points. Norton was a washed up 38 having his last fight. Daniels had lost just 1 of his last18 fights, a tko on a cut eye to Ali.He had beaten Alongi and DeJohn in his last 2 fights Norton had won just 2 of his last 5and been brutally taken out in a round by Shavers Spot the difference? Patterson didn't go near those other contenders either. What does the Richardson non fight have to do with anything? They did actually fight and Richardson fouled out to save himself a more prolonged beating. Ex rugby player Dick was always a dirty fighter. Cleveland Williams of the U.S. defeated Dick Richardson in their scheduled 10 round bout tonight when the Welsh boxer was disqualified in the 4th round for butting. In the 1st round the Welshman forced the Yank to back away from a flurry of blows. After that, Williams took charge. He floored Richardson for a count of two in the 1st round just after the Welsh boxer drew his first warning for butting. Blood ran from a gash on Williams' cheek as he sat in his corner between the 1st and 2nd rounds. He rocked Richardson with a left to the jaw in the 2nd and halted a Richardson flurry with two uppercuts in the 3rd. The American's cheek began bleeding again after Richardson was warned for butting. Then came the 4th and Richardson butted himself right out of the fight." -United Press Williams earned a temporary suspension not a ban, trust me . I know,Im an expert on bans! By 1959, Williams was 44-2, with thirty-five knockouts. But Williams was part of a “Lost Generation” of heavyweights kept on permafrost since 1956 by the oddball combo of Floyd Patterson—shy, mannerly, introspective—and Cus D’Amato—paranoid, eccentric, Nietzsche devotee. Heavyweights as talented as Eddie Machen, Zora Folley, Nino Valdes, and, of course, Sonny Liston were shut out of title shots by the hypocritical mafia boycott of Cus D’Amato, whose self-righteous crusade against underworld riffraff had the added benefit of ensuring that Patterson could continue his sideshow reign for as long as possible. Never mind that D’Amato was partners with bookies, gamblers, and, irony of all ironies, Anthony “Fat Tony” Salerno, less than twenty years away from being named boss of the Genovese crime family. Like some of the wiseguys he waxed sanctimoniously about from his spartan cot setup at the Gramercy Gym, D’Amato was a target of the New York State Athletic Commission, which banned him from renewing his managerial license. In 1958 Williams took a break from the broiling Texas sun to win via DQ over Dick Richardson in London. A rematch was scotched when Williams backed out at the last moment, claiming voices had told him not to go through with the fight. He was suspended by the BBBoC. Want to talk about how many fights Cooney cancelled on? I see you haven't changed a bit, you're still the premier Williams hater you always were, and after him it's Liston isn't it. So far this is probably the only Williams thread you haven't mentioned Graveyard Walters,or Curley Lee. What can we expect next ? Nineteen years old, late sub Williams being ko'd by Satterfield That usually gets a mention doesn't it?
That maybe so but Daniels had a far more lower profile than Ken Norton. Sometimes that’s how it works. yeah Williams scored a hard fought points win whereas Cooney made a huge splash by scoring a famously remembered knockout. I notice Williams did not get a mention here. And the reason is, these guys ranked ahead of him. And let’s not get carried away about boycotts and guys being shut out during the rematch clause era. Nobody blames Ali for having to rematch Liston. I’m sorry it comes across that way but I am merely putting things into perspective here. Williams was a longtime prospect and short term contender. It’s about context. Not hatred. For what it’s worth I believe Sonny Liston would have brutalised Gerry Cooney with little more effort than it took to demolish Williams.
Nope Williams beat the 6th ranked Daniels very convincingly. This is the report, the real report ,not the," Choklab version". "Third ranked Cleveland Williams scored a bloody unanimous decision Saturday night over 6th ranked heavyweight Billy Daniels in their nationally televised 10 round bout. Daniels rocked Williams in the 1st round with a whistling right to the chin. But after that round the fight belonged to Williams, who stalked Daniels like a big cat throwing effective punches. Williams opened up a cut over Daniels' right eye in the 3rd round, another one over the left eye in the 8th round and bloodied Daniels' nose in the 9th. Daniels was in trouble several times, and he slipped twice but he was never knocked down. In the explosive 9th round, Williams staggered Daniels three different times with powerful jaw-crushing left hooks. But each time the game and crafty Daniels managed to clinch until the cobwebs cleared from his head." -United Press International. Some things never change. Unofficial UPI scorecard - 97-92 Williams
I think it was more to do with Ali running out of contenders and looking for as many paydays before the draft got him. Williams, Foley, Cooper and London were all yesterday’s men by the time Ali fought them. But Ali didn’t have time to wait for the newer guys like Spencer, Quarry, Frazier and Bonavena to develop into potential challengers. So a lot of guys had been around too long from the backlog caused by the rematch clause era. Which Ali himself was a part of.
It was a competitive fight over the first 5 rounds. Watch the film. This was not the big time splash that Cooney would make stopping celebrated veterans. This content is protected This content is protected
Well…. He twice beat Billy Daniels and then later Terry Daniels. At least he got the “ Daniels” thing down
You missed out Frankie Daniels too. Little Frankie Daniels was also twice outpointed by the Big cat. Ernie Terrell and George Chuvalo both stopped frankie Yet he lasts 20 rounds against Williams. Sonny Liston knocked out Frankie right after Williams went the distance with him the second time, but you can’t put that down to Williams because Frankie was kayoed thrice before 19lb heavier Williams ever fought him. then there was Candy McDaniels as well. Fair to say Williams had a vendetta against the whole Daniels clan. Billy twice. Frankie twice. Terry once. And Williams knocked none of them out!
Lol. I think he would have got on well with Stormy Daniels too. And she would probably beat Graveyard walters and Baby booze as well!
If you knew the slightest bit about the alphabet rankings of the 80's we wouldn't be discussing this.
Oh come on JT, there’s no need to be like that. Alphabet rankings works both ways. Nobody had a problem with Tony Tucker being the IBF number one contender when Spinks got stripped. What had Tucker done for that? All Tucker had done was earn two tame points win over an even more washed up Jimmy Young than Cooney had much earlier stopped and pip lazy ass James Broad over the distance. So nobody knew Tucker anymore than Gregg at that time. At least Eddie Gregg decked the never before dropped Tex Cobb to earn his WBA number 3 ranking! And Cobb was fresh off that inconclusive technical decision that somehow qualified for the vacant “intercontinental WBC heavyweight title” against Mike Dokes just months earlier. The rankings were crazy back then. But if you want to throw out Eddie Gregg as a rated fighter you may as well throw out Tony Tucker and Buster Douglas as well. Half the division in fact.
