The fact of the matter is Gregg wasn't ring rated when he fought Cooney. I'm not concerned with what your opinion was of these guys rankings and other such sidetracking.

Daniels had lost one fight in his career when he first met Williams - to Ali. The three losses he had between bouts against Williams were against solidly ranked contenders. Williams ebat Daniels extremely convincingly first outing and comfortably in the second i believe. Two of Miteff's most recent losses were to highly rated contenders.

Perhaps you are a little slow. The alphabet ratings are not what is being talked about here which you'd know if you kept up.

Going into their first bout, Daniels was undefeated barring a loss to the GOAT (whom he gave an excellent effort against) hardly anything to be ashamed of.

In their second bout, Daniels was coming off a win over the no. 1 contender.

Not to mention Daniels was ranked in both bouts.

    They were not remotely comparable

Eddie Gregg's WBC rating is a puzzle, really. At the end of January 1986 - after his final win against the frequently defeated Walter Santemore - he is unranked.

End of February, suddenly he's #9. Coincidentally, this would be just about the time the Cooney fight was being negotiated.

End of May - immediately before the fight. Not only has Gregg climbed to #7 but Cooney himself - inactive for a year and a half - has somehow earned the #10 spot.

Cynics might think a hard-headed appraisal of the fighters' abilities was not the only factor at work here.

Anyone give any gravitas to the WBC ratings?

Im talking about the RING ratings not the silly WBC.
Do give an example of the absurdity of that alphabet organization, here is their current heavyweight top ten.
    Champ Fury
    1.Wilder
    2.Joyce
3.Parker .lost to Whyte who isnt ranked
    4.Sanchez*
    5.Ruiz
    6.Ortiz
    7.Kayabel*
    8.Hrgovic
    9.Makhmudov*
    10.Hunter*
Now explain what those names with an asterisk attached have done to place them in a top ten?
And while you are at it explain why they are ranked and,
    Usyk
    Joshua
    Whyte
    Are not?
