I don't think it is the case that anybody with a dynamite punch beats Patterson.

His resume definitely shows a mixed picture in this regard.

An older Patterson certainly proved he could take a punch in his fights with Quarry,Ellis,Chuvalo and others but Cooney would be hard to avoid in the early rds. Floyd s speed could be a factor but Gerry was a fast starter and would be tough fight for Patterson because of it. If FP can avoid getting blasted in the early rds, his speed may factor .

Ellis really wasnt a big puncher... Chuvalo was a good puncher but not on Cooneys level.... Quarry the biggest pucher of the 3 you mentioned but not even he could bang like Cooney... Cooney would even be a big hw today and he had skills to go with it... I agree the early rounds is where Cooney gets this.. Even with his big advantage in speed i dont see him being able to avoid him ... Hate to use the old cliche but styles make fights and i dont see Floyd fighting the kind of fight to stay away, especially in the early rounds. Which was Cooneys strongest and Patterson at his most vulnerable.

    anarci,,,,

    Correct, 'styles make fights'.

Floyd, one never to really back-up. Usually a straight ahead boxer.
Followed the school of Boxing 101.

Think this fight would be like the Ken Norton fight.,,,,,,,,Cooney W KO 1.

Johansen was probably more dangerous with his right than Cooney was with his left hook.

Granted Johansen sparked Patterson once, but he also lost the series.

I don't think this is true actualy.

Patterson fought some prety moblie fights, notably against Johansen and Chuvalo.

Cooney was also 7 inches taller and 35lbs heavier... Cooneys chin might have not been the best but guaranteed it was better than Ingos, not to mention he would have been harder to hit.... Ingo could really bang but i think more times than not you get alot more Bang from Cooneys left then Ingos right.

Patterson is the better fighter by far, but Cooney would knock him out. The size difference would be too big. Michael Spinks was much bigger than Floyd and had the right skill set to beat Cooney....Patterson is too small and his style puts him at great risk.

    i'll pick floyd..
cooney was a good fighter but floyd a great fighter.
his chin was a bit weak, but he got up a lot of times after being knocked down. a think patterson is way to fast for cooney

Size doesn´t mean much when the class difference is so big as here. Floyd has quite a style advantage here. Yeah, Cooney´s size and fast starting could pose a problem in the beginnning and it´s very likely Cooney puts Patterson down. But tell me guys, how often was Patterson knocked out with one punch? It took harder punchers and better fighters than Cooney more than one to stop him. And even then Floyd was at his feet. Floyd by stoppage between 5 and 7.

Cause i cant see Ingo holding up to the shots Larry put on Cooney for 13 rounds... Holmes wasnt the biggest puncher but just dont see Ingo being able to take that...

A lot of unknown factors here. I'm sure Patterson would get dropped, but I don't see Cooney necessarily finishing him off. He tended to back up even against smaller opponents, and Patterson would go to town on him with combinations that Cooney would struggle to avoid. Cooney could be utterly helpless against such tactics, we don't know. He sure looked helpless against Spinks when the latter unloaded on him.
