I think Cooney stops him in the mid rounds with a pulverizing body shot. Cooney was a wicked body puncher.
Chuvalo by decison or a late TKO. The early rounds would be, however, pretty brutal. Chuvalo's Iron jaw hold up admirably and the canadian beat gerry down in the late rounds. Not sure if Gooney was as good a finisher as Foreman or frazier were.
George Chuvalo was a very underestimated heavyweight contender with a cast iron jaw. While he could be out boxed by other quicker contenders, he could withstand an enormous amount of punishment. In March 1966, then champion Muhammad Ali penned Chuvalo, The Washerwoman. But that Washerwoman stood for 15 rounds absorbing Ali's best, only to lose on points. In his entire career, George never tasted the canvas. In Dec 1969, he stopped fellow contender Jerry Quarry. Gerry Cooney was an awkward gangly heavyweight who could knock out an opponent, especially if they were runaways from the local Adult Rest Home, Jimmy Young and Ken Norton come to mind, but never fought the younger more skilled heavyweight contenders of his era. He was outclassed by then WBC Champion Larry Holmes in 1982, TKO 13. Cooney may land often, scoring with his left hook. But as others before him, peak Joe Frazier and George Foreman, Chuvalo cannot be knocked out. After absorbing several awkward blows, Chuvalo wins by TKO 11, stopping an exhausted Gerry Cooney.
I have to agree. Chuvalo was very good but he would be against an absolute powerhouse in Cooney. He would test Chuvalo's chin more than any other. I see Chuvalo getting through if the ref does not stop the fight to early. Cooney would try to KO Chuvalo after rocking him and expend all his energy - his lack of experience in pacing all but ensures a Chuvalo comeback and ultimate stoppage of Cooney.
Totally agree, but Gerry fought ancient relics, never saw him against a peak Greg Page or a peak Terrible Tim Witherspoon. Again he fought ancient fighters to make him look good, not to be mean but he appeared always off balance when throwing punches. With his size, he was better suited for Pro Basketball.
Maybe my friend because Gerry Cooney likes to fight relics, he does not stand a chance against young contenders his own age. He let his management use him, he appears too clumsy. But as always, I respect your opinion.
And respect yours too Richard. And do agree with Cooney always fighting over the hill guys. What they should have done after Holmes kod him, is built him up slowly and this time put him in with half decent guys then move up. Build his confidence up. Then get him a shot at one of the alphabet boys. Not saying he'd beat any of them but more chance than fighting Larry Holmes.
Probably a terrific fight. I’d rather see Cooney box Chuvalo rather than trying to maul him in the opening moments. Given that prospecting versions of Foreman and Frazier were able to force stoppage on George it’s not impossible that Cooney could do it as well. My thinking is that this goes some rounds and some big shots are exchanged
