I can't imagine this going to a decision. I'm going with Cooney by KO. They both hit really hard and, fior the most part, lost to no one but the crème de le crème. While Quarry was quicker and was probably the better fighter I think Cooney's size would have given Jerry problems. Eventually he would have been caught and sent down for the count. Ask me again tomorrow and I might go the other way.
Punching downwards with power is hugely difficult. That's one of the reasons George Foreman never fancied Quarry. Cooney was no technecian. Quarry was a superb counter puncher, Something Cooney was always a peach for. Has to be the more skilled Quarry around five or six here.
If Quarry could box and counter Cooney early and avoid his left hook, and Quarry was a fairly skilled fighter he could take a close decision over 10 but it would literally be walking a tight rope every round. Cooney by stoppage is the smart play here.
Disagreeing with the poll here, Cooney could punch huge but a motivated Quarry of Lyle/Shavers at the peak of his game would counter Cooney to a decision, maybe a late TKO.
Cooney busts him up early, he doesn't want to give Quarry a chance to get in to the fight and use his superior skills on him. Cooney tko 3 Quarry
I wouldn't say Cooney by KO, more like a TKO win for Cooney. Although Quarry took Lyle's best shots and won the fight, but Lyle tends to remain passive and simply didn't pour more. Cooney on the other hand is extremely aggressive, constantly pressuring and has excellent body punching with a solid chin. I feel like a TKO win or a bodyshot KO win for Cooney.
All about the beholder. The idea to me of Quarry blowing up against cool, stamina central Cooney. Sell that to me.
