Gerry Cooney vs. Jimmy Young

That 1976 Pre-Olympic Heavyweight Tournament was no cake walk.
Plus Gerry Cooney was so 'skinny and lanky', and did not show an ability
to take a 'good poke on the chops'.

Eddie Davis steam-rolled him in an amateur bout, and that was at 178 lbs.

 

I have the feeling that if not for that cut Cooney would have wound up getting tired and stopped in the later rounds. Cooney had so much potential and was a wasted talent. I would have liked to have seen what Cooney would have done with a different trainer.

 

I see Young getting better and better as this bout progreses without that cut. With the pressure of trying to get back into title contention, I think he might of opened it up a little more than he used to knowing this might be his last shot. I'm thinking maybe a seventh rd KO for Young. If he'd been given the dec. he desrved against Shavers, Occassio, Dokes, Norten, Ali, and his wins against Foreman and Lyle twice, I think more people would see him as the ring genious he was. This was his night to get back, and bad luck screwed him again, so sad.

In New York, we all knew Gerry Cooney had 'soft whiskers'.

Thats why he was limited in his fights.
The word on the street was, his management only wanted fighters that were
Plus 40.
Ron Lyle, Ken Norton,,,,,,,,,they even turned down Earnie Shavers.
They wanted a TV fight with Leroy Boone, but the networks turned that down.

I'm assuming they wanted nothing to do with Greg Page or Michael Dokes either in 80/81?

 

Both would have been made to look foolish by the Young that beat Foreman, Norton and Ali.

 

Possibly, but I always felt that Page, if his head was on right, and his game on, would always beat Young.Dokes' skills weren't as tight as Page's, so I could see him losing to that version of Young.
