If you could tell which of two fighters was better, just by watching film of them, then you would not need to work for a living.

There is nothing in Cooney's record, to suggest that he was a class above Buddy Baer, if indeed he was even his equal!

    Are you kidding me?

Where´s the Young RTD4, Norton KO1, Lyle KO1 on Buddy Baers resume?
Where are the losses to nobodys on Gerry Cooneys resume, of which Baer has plenty?

The bottom line is that they both built their resumes blitzing nobodies, and people who were somebody previously/subsequently.

Neither of them beat a current live contender, with the arguable exception of Baer.

Cooney had a tidier record because he was brought along more carefully, and took less dangerous fights.

There is nothing much separating them in terms of resume, with the exception that Cooney's resume ran its course, but Baer might have gone on to show us more.

Cooney modernizes Louis in less than two.

Gerry has a good chance to put Joe down, could he keep him there, doubt it. And then Joe gets up and lays him out in the second, or third, though he has a slim chance of doing it in the opener.

All Louis has to do is avoid Cooney's only, but real weapon: his left hook. And I believe Louis was smart enough boxer to do so. Plus Cooney couldn't go 15 rounds effectively.

Gerry could certainly catch Joe and KHTFO. More likely it turns into a second Holmes contest. . Joe wears down a fading Cooney 10th round or later.

If Cooney lands that big left hook it's over, but I think Louis was too good of a fighter for Cooney and likely would have knocked Cooney out in round 5

Gerry Cooney pre Holmes was a bully and quite destructive. GC would
try to blast out the much smaller Joe Louis early. JL was vulnerable to
knockdown and if Buddy Baer could with left hook so could GC.
However JL had championship qualities and great recuperative powers.
JL would survive and brutally breakdown GC.
GC fails to come out for the 6th rd.

I actually see Cooney, like Baer, taking a spinning trip to the canvas after a short Louis right.

Sure, one fought much more frequently, since it was usual these days. Cooney did not, took a layoff, and never came back, which was probably in some cases his own fault.
I´m not arguing on their resume, i´m talking about peak H2H qualities. And by watching the film, they are not on the same level!
