Gerry Cooney vs Joe Louis 1941

I’d take Louis with the caveat that Cooney was a lot better than guys like Galento and Baer who dropped Louis.

 

Louis would try to get him out of there quickly. As soon as Joe lands one on the button, Gerry's on borrowed time.

I could see Cooney dropping Louis and hurting him with the left hook early and then he gets dispatched in the middle rounds.

 

Cooney at his best is probably a little better than most people think, but against Joe Louis he's in for a wicked combo that drops him. Then I'd sure hate to be Cooney when he gets back up.

 

Joe takes a little time to feel him out, takes some shots along the way, then takes Cooney out in about 6 or 7.

 

Gerry Cooney fit the general mold of the type of fighter that Louis regularly demolished. Gerry’s punching power would be a factor but Louis ultimately wins by stoppage or KO

 

Hard to say, Cooney doesn't have the best of chins

 

It's Joe Louis.
He should be massively favoured over a guy that never even won a title or beat a live contender.... But things happen in boxing that make no sense whatsoever.
All I'll say is that Joe s chin could be hit and he could be hurt.
If Cooney gets a chance to stick that killer hook on Joe's chin at just the right time...

But if this fight was actually taking place this week, then my cash would be on the Brown Bomber,but with a little bit maybe on the other guy.

He hurts him a bit, maybe drops him. He needs to keep landing that left hook for round after round to have a chance at winning and it's simply not going to happen.

 

Was he better, ort just better managed?
