Do you remember Cooney's fight against George Chaplin, in 1984? I thought I saw signs that Cooney was shot. Cooney won in the second with a devastating left hook, but until then, was getting the **** smacked out of him. Lucky for Cooney, Chaplin could not punch. I remember being shocked at how easily Chaplin scored with punches, all of which landed with a loud, slapping percussion. Cooney's head was even snapped back a couple of times. That fight occured while Cooney was in the midst of his semi-retirement following the Holmes fight. It gave us hints of what would happen to Cooney against Spinks.
Cooney was way past it when he fought Spinks, pre-Holmes, Cooney vs. Spinks would be very close. When Cooney fought Spinks his confidence and self-esteem were at an all time low add in the booze and that is a recipe for disaster.
That pretty much hits the nail on the head. Cooney never really improved as his career progressed, and whatever potential he might've had (and who knows if he really had world class potential anyway) was pretty much squandered.
