Tex made a career out of being underestimated. They were contemporaries and never fought. Of the two who was better protected coming up? Tex fought much tougher competition. There was a good reason they didn’t fight. Cooney’s camp was rightfully concerned about Tex.
Cooney would stop him. Cooney only came unstuck against the top level, against the Cobbs of this world, he kills.
There was nothing stopping Cooney from fighting Cobb, if he fought that it would give him a sure win over a ranked contender.
I think Cooney wrecks Tex to the body and stops him. Tex was solid, but wasn't going to pose an immediate threat to keep Gerry from coming in full steam. Even if Tex stays afloat, Cooney outboxed a still fresh Animal Lopez pretty clearly and I suspect he could do similarly to Cobb in this time frame.
Cobb overrated on his win against a aging Shaver. Shavers had been to hospital before fight for retina trouble and wasn't the same fighter in shape like he was for rematch for Holmes. Cooney batters Cobb via dec.
I was just watching the Norton / Cobb fight ( whom I think Cobb won) And read this fight is what decided who would face the rising Gerry Cooney. Norton won and was decimated by Cooney. Tex Cobb is made of Iron and oak, and had stamina. I think Tex gives Cooney the fight of his life, and really pushes Cooney to his limits. If this fight had happened, I think Cooney would win a split decision but be much better prepared for Holmes later in his career. It is a real shame this fight did not happen for both Cobb and Cooney.
Cobb was never a Great White Hope, he was just white. No one ever thought he would be a world champ. Cooney, on the other hand was the epitome of a GWH. He had a lot of power and, for a while, decent hand speed. He was just no match for Holmes and was no longer a top fighter when Spinks and Foreman ended him. Prime Cooney punishes Cobb and the carnage, once again, causes Howard Cosell to quit as a ringside announcer.
