Any boxer named Donovan who didn’t go with the nickname “Hurdy Gurdy Man” and use this as his ring walk music missed the boat: This content is protected
Although very raw, Cooney had terrific power and was a fast starter. Ruddock was probably the better all round Fighter but I think this is a bad match for him. I see Cooney jumping on Ruddock early and staying on him to a KO or stoppage inside 3.
I think I’d favor Ruddock because he showed that he could hang with bangers in a way that Cooney didn’t.
Cooney was faster and a better boxer. But , I would say Ruddock catches him with a good punch and then Cooney gets Koed in short order. Cooney had trouble when he got in with big punchers with durability. Cooney had everything but experience in handling being hurt himself. He generally lost all his wits and did not know how to hold or slow down his opponent when in trouble. Razor gets tagged and hit quickly, but one lucky return shot starts Cooney crumbling. Ruddock had enough killer instinct to finish his man once he caught him. Close fight, but I would make Ruddock a 60/40 favorite.
When two guys are of a similar class with similar styles and levels of power, I often go with the guy who showed more determination and heart. That's definitely Ruddock. He had two nuclear wars with Tyson (going the distance in one of them) and got off the floor to beat Smith. Anything could happen as neither guy had very great defense or ring IQ, but I'd favor Ruddock 55:45 for being a little tougher and harder to keep down. Cooney had a slight edge in fundamentals.
