Recommended watching, not because Lyle wasn't old, he was. Watch the front page video because Conney really had good left to the body and in-fighting skills he seldom gets credit for.

Cooney had terrific left to the body, one of the hardest punches anyone has ever had at heavyweight. And yes he was a good infighter, too.

For such a big guy who despite his sheer size had a lot of gangliness to him, Cooney threw a tremendous left hook with a nice, tight arc. It was a thing of beauty.

How far do you think Cooney would have gone if he had a strong right hand in addition to the left?

he actually did have a nice right hand. as I remember, Lyle looked in real good shape, and was moving around Cooney like a young boxer. Looked like any moment would be unleashing a hurting back to Gerry. Only problem was, I don't really remember him throwing even one punch. I wish he did. No matter which way the fight went, I wish he would have thrown some leather

I think Cooney with a better trainer and a normal manager would have been an alphabet champion, maybe not over Holmes in 1982. Over Coetzee or Dokes? Yep.

He just wasn't good enough to beat prime Larry Holmes, the best technical boxer with the fast hands, a rock for a chin, and toughness to spare. That was his toughest match up. Had Cooney fought Holmes in 1985, he probably takes it, assuming alcohol didn't get to him first.

A sensitive soul, Cooney needs guidance from his manager, instead he got a clown show.

Even against Foreman - the few moments it lasted - I was amazed how how quick his left hand was, considering he looked like a man who shouldn't have been anywhere near a ring at that point.
