I like Briggs whiskers much better of the 2. And the Cooney defense is not good enough to deal with the speed and power of this guy's punches. It would help the Cooney chances if he bothered to move his head and if he did not get shook up by temple shots
Well now I never thought I'd see the day where I actually had to think about a Briggs fight on this forum. But this has done it for me. Briggs: Foreman, Lyakhovic, Mercer. Cooney: Young, Lyle, Norton. Both have questionable resumes, both are known as huge punchers. I'm giving the edge to Briggs here. I think he weather's the early storm and stops Cooney late on.
People are forgetting Brigg's was a fast starter and that Cooney had a very questionable chin and was down against guys like Holmes and Spinks who were far from being power punchers. Cooney's large hairy gut will be an inviting target for Brigg's crushing hooks to the body. No way Cooney stops him early when an old wheezing Briggs got beaten from pillar to post against Vitali and remained on his feet. If Cooney somehow manages to survive past the 9th, I could see him winning a split decision or stopping a gassed Briggs late. The likeliest scenario is that Cooney hurts Briggs badly a couple times, maybe drops him once, but Briggs breaks Cooney down with very painful body shots and clubbing blows upstairs.
Cooney lasted almost 13 rounds with Holmes. It was exaustion and a cumuliativee effect from Holmes Against Spinks, Cooney was past prime and took a boatload of clean shots before getting stopped. I never liked Cooney and thought he was hyped. But at his peak he was better than Shannon Briggs.
