    Folks,

Both Gerry Cooney and Texas Cobb more-than-likely hit their peaks right around 1982 when both fighters challenged but lost in their title bids against the great Lawrence Holmes in Vegas and Houston.....

In a total "Dream Fight" who do you think would've won between "Cooney and Cobb" in a flashback time-machine??? I'm talking about the '82 version of both dudes...... I cannot decide right now.......

Would this be for the Caucasian Heavyweight title then?

I dont think Cooney stops him unless he sustains a great deal of punishment to the body or too much swelling. I think this would have been a great build up of confidence and stamina mindset builder for Gerry, I always wanted to see this fight for Gerry before he fought Holmes or Weaver...Confidence is a great thing for a fighter and not ever going past 8 rds. did not prepare Gerry to go past 10...I think this would have been a good fight for Cooney to get under his belt and Cobb did not hit so hard and his aim was not the best.

Cooney has the better skills and power and fired his power shots at a much quicker speed. Cobb had the much better chin. I would pick Cooney based on those attributes.

I just reviewed Cobb's 1980 TKO over Shavers with Ken Norton and Gerry Cooney sitting at ringside calling the action alongside of Donald Dunphy...... Cooney was suppose to fight Shavers in Aug. 1980, but Cooney haired out cuz of some questionable injury.... So, in came Tex Cobb as a replacement for the injured Gerry Cooney...... Thus, Cobb kicked Shavers' ass pretty hard to force the 8th round TKO....... No ****ing way Cooney could've taken the blows Cobb took from Ernesto Shavers in 1980........ Back in '80, Cobb's chin was concrete......

Ironically, Cooney was supposed to fight Earnie Shavers but got injured in training. Tex Cobb substituted for Cooney and stopped Shavers in the 8th round of a wildly sloppy entertaining brawl. I dont think Cooney would have stopped Cobb, but I dont think Cobb had the power to hurt Cooney either as he was more an arm puncher, no weight behind his punches.

    Cooney vastly superior boxer.

Randy would need to land a lucky punch.

    Cooney by Wide UD.

You know, some feel Norton got a gift over Cobb in '80..... I never saw the fight..... To my knowledge off the top, Cobb only had that one blemish going in agasint Holmes in 1982...... Both Cooney and Cobb were fresh in 1982...

Yeah, Cobb had apparently bet on himself much to his detriment against Norton and he decided he was in a mood to decide the better man outside the ring and challenged Norton. Norton declined.

Norton cleanly beat Cobb, not a very competitive fight actually.

Norton did great work off the ropes, landed beautiful, hard clean punches on Cobb the entire fight. Monster shots.

Norton clearly won the last round by battering Cobb from pillar to post. Cobb didn't win the fight but I was impressed with his granite chin.

During the ring introductions Gerry Cooney and Tex Cobb exchanged a few words. I think they were trying to make Cobb vs Cooney but Norton derailed those plans. Norton ended up being in line to fight Cooney and we all know how that ended up. The strategy he used against Cobb was never going to work against a puncher like Cooney.

According to Texas Cobb, he claimed Norton walked over to him after the fight and said: "You Whupped My Ass Tonight." Perhaps the aging Norton was just being classy.?.?

The only one who got whupped was Tex Cobb himself in the last round. That was a savage beating he took.

I think Cooney would take this one. Cobb could indeed take unreal punishment and he would against Cooney. Cobb didn't have much in the way of footwork or head movement so he is going to be pretty much a stationary target. Not being the fastest in the handspeed dept. to boot, Cobb would have some power but not handspeed and combination punching. Cooney was a vicious body puncher and took a decent punch himself at that point. Cobb would try to draw Gerry into a fire fight to get his punches off. Would he be able to score enough or hurt Cooney if Gerry did exchange? Would this be bad new for Tex? All in all I believe that Cooney would get to Tex covincingly enough for the ref to step in and call a halt to the fight. Cooney TKO round 5 or 6.
