Anytime before 2005, Cooney has a good chance of scoring a knockout or a stoppage.. Once Wlad started playing it safe and not mixing it up with punchers, Cooney would get outboxed and shut down late.
Wlad is pretty amazing in how he made adjustments. His skillz have negated his less than spectacular chin. He is a very skilled boxer.
Nobody's chin is spectacular against Cooney. However, Gerry doesnt have a great beard either. And Wlad, who has an underrated chin of late (see the flush shots he ate in Peter II) is the best at stifling a puncher's offense.
Let's be honest, Wlad is leagues above Cooney in the skill department, and is just as devastating a puncher. Wlad easily outboxes Cooney, shuts him down, then knocks out cooney late. Cooney could not stop holmes fast right hand, he won't be able to shut down a 2010 version of Wladimir Klitschko.
cooney would always have a chance to stop wlad, however I don't think he does if Wlad uses his jab and is smart, like has been lately.. Wlad had straighter punches and unless Cooney does something fast like Corrie Sanders, he would land easily on Cooney since Cooney never had a good or decent defense.
Pre-81 Cooney wins 9 out of 10 times. He was an excellent fighter during those years (77-81). Both Klitschkos are over-rated imo.
Cooney needed half an hour to set his feet and dip that hook. Wlad's footwork has gotten so good at this point and his 1-2 is so fast that Conney would do nothing but eat jab/cross, jab/cross until his frail giraffe legs gave way. Just two different levels of class operating here.
People talking about a massive 'skill disparity' but Cooney didn't look too bad against a prime Holmes. And Holmes had mad skillz, no ? I think Cooney's chin and Wlad's right hand is the bigger factor. Cooney did a funny dance and hit the deck when Larry landed a straight right on him. The other thing is Wlad's strength. Cooney was almost as big but didn't have the same physical strength. Cooney was actually a freaky skinny middleweight in late 'teens.
