Vitali Klitchko was on the verge of taking Lennox Lewis WBC World Heavyweight Title, on the night of June 21 2003, rocking Lewis throughout the back and forth battle, until a very bad cut in round 6, ended that fight. Gerry Cooney faced WBC World Heavyweight Champion Larry Holmes, on June 23 1982, but was stopped in round 13, as Holmes retained his title. The bout was marred by low blows, during that encounter. Both fighter would initiate a chess match like fight in the very beginning of this bout, as both respect the other's power. Starting in round 5, Wladimir moves in and attacks Cooney's body. Klitchko smashes home a very hard right hand to the liver, followed by a paralyzing right hand, that crashes against Gerry's jaw. Cooney falls flat on his back taking the full 10 count. Klitchko has a better defense than Gerry, who appears awkward at times. And Wladimir hits almost as hard as his brother.
Agree with this. Wlad would be pretty cautious against a guy like Cooney and he's be content to outpoint Gerry. Cooney would have to really press Wlad to get him to unload a la Pulev. Wlad used to often get into almost a sort of agreement with his opponents that he'd be content to win on points so long as the other guy didn't try too hard. I agree that if Cooney had somebody like a Steward to train him, he'd have been much, much better.
Cooney didn't prove to me that he should be favoured over Povetkin, Haye, Ibragimov, Byrd, Peter or Pulev. So that's 6, and he beat 2 of them twice.
Be serious please. Byrd is the only one that would have a decent shot. He was slick and elusive. As I said before Cooney was flawed but his power was real. Guys like Sam Peter would likely go life and death with shopworn versions of Ron Lyle, Kenny Norton and Jimmy Young. How would Ross Purity do against Cooney?
The fact that folks pick a hype job with a record padded on hasbeens over a guy who dominated the division for a decade speaks volumes regarding critical reasoning in these parts.
I wouldn't call Cooney a hype job, but I do agree that Wlad should be favoured quite heavily against him.
ARE WE TALKING GERRY COONEY FROM LONG ISLAND NY? HE NEVER BEAT ANYONE IN THE TOP TEN -AMERICAN VERSION OF JOE BUGNER WITH A BETTER PUNCH.
OK. He was a very talented prospect who beat the requisite hasbeens, was rushed to a title shot and mentally fell apart afterward, leaving him another story of lost potential.
BOXING 24 : They're always comparing him to the alltime greats, and he never beat anyone great, Young, Lyle and Noton was nowhere near their prime, and Cooney would not even fight TEX COBB.
Seamus: I get you Seamus, I'm like a rankings guru, Ring Magazine got me this way as a kid walking to the grocery store on the mag stands, and guys like Cooney, Bugner, Bobick, etc. got huge ratings, without beating anybody who was rated. Jimmy Ellis beat 6 who were ranked at the time, and five in a row! Quarry 9 (w-5 knockouts, (few Champions in any division beat 9 ranked fighter;s in their careers).Floyd Patterson had a great career vs top ten contenders, Frazier defeated at least (10) I can name, And Muhammad has to have they alltime heavyweight record of (32) (he was 32-5 vs top ten and 20 knockouts). Cooney was a gifted fighter in one respect was that great left hook. Yet so was Tommy Morrison.
