These fellows are no Holmes, exept Primo "The thundering Oaf" Carnera.
    He beats the rest.

Only strong favorite is Baer. His chin and powerful right would be enough to outslug Cooney and knock him out.
    Cooper would be blasted out.
Carnera is a toss up, but based on watching him on video, I think Cooney lands enough leather to end his night before the final bell.
Williams and Johansson are toss ups. Depends who gets in first. Williams started quick but also left himself open. Johansson would have to find a home for his right early.

Cooney probably deserves to beat Bert Cooper but he only has a punchers chance with the rest.

The night he lost to Holmes he showed an awful lot against a truly great fighter. Pity he had been so inactive in relation to Larry. And also that he never got over it.

But he cannot deserve to outrank champions.

The problem for Gentleman Gerry is the damage caused by more tko or ko losses. He was hardly a Mike Weaver type guy that could handle a loss and become better. He got worse. If you just add the effect of a Baer ko loss itself, we are talking what--a 20 or 30% loss in effectiveness and skills?

Any kind of subtraction from Gerry's overall effectiveness really makes him far more vulnerable to opponents 2-5. At that point, he'd be doing well to be a 500 fighter. there is a reason the Cooney braintrust was not taking on his contemporaries. some guys cannot handle too many losses and this is one of them. Stiff competition is not what is needed.

Beats all except maybe Baer. Baer out toughs him.

I can't see him beating Baer. The rest are close, Cooper would likely lose to him.

I liked Cooney more than a lot of people did after his losses. He was a huge puncher and underrated fighter who would have been a world champion had he fought someone other than Holmes that night or if he remained active afterward. I believe he would ko Cooper. He might win some, lose some with others you mentioned.

I think Cooney would beat Primo.

I think Ingo would more likely win, and I'd very much pick Baer.

I think the problem with Cooper is if he lands flush on Gerry a couple of times. Ten to one Cooney would drop. I don't remember Cooper being a great finisher, so it's possible he might get back up and win.

I just don't see Gerry taking a lot of flush shots from big punchers and standing. I doubt there are a lot of people who'd disagree with me...Holmes was standing too straight up (as he usually did, to his detriment) when he landed that shot in the second round. Had it landed with full force behind it the ref would have stopped it imo.

That said, you can see even without full force that right devastated Gerry and he was only saved by Holmes' ultimately erroneous tactical decision to keep himself from punching out.
