Boy it sure was refreshing to see a great white hope like Gerry Cooney hammer the hell out of a peak, prime and fully rejuvenated Ken Norton.. I don't think Ken could have beaten this New York raised Irish kid if he cloned himself ten times over and was armed to the gills with M-16's ... Norton at 38 was probably at his ultimate best... The outstanding performances against Tex Cobb and Scott Ledoux proved this. His loss to Shavers was a fluke, so I don't factor it in....
I see agenda here. Either way, it's performances in fights like these that prevent Norton from ever breaking away from the other 70s contenders and being considered great, despite temporarily holding a belt.
I would have liked to have seen Cooney face his fellow contenders at the time. Men like Greg Page, Michael Dokes, Snipes, even guys like Trevor Berbick and Floyd "jumbo" Cummings. Cooney looked devastating against Lyle and Norton but they were both proven to be totally washed-up. Lyle had lost to a journeyman named Lynn Ball in 1979. Norton had barely eked out a draw against Scott LeDoux after dominating early and becoming exhausted at the end. If Cooney had dome the same thing to Page, Dokes, Weaver, Tate, Coetzee, just to cite some examples then that hype train would have been totally justified.
The Norton-Ledoux fight occurred in 1979. Norton came back in 1980 and had a decent win against Tex Cobb in October after Cobb had beaten Shavers two months earlier.
There was a Jones-Griffin/Tua-Moorer/Bowe-Mathis Jr. in this fight. Counts less than Shavers-Norton which was legit. I had never yet discredit a win for being a fluke , at least not yet , who knows what the future holds ?
It just goes to show what a big tall hard hitting heavyweight would've done to him. Bowe, Lewis, or either Klitschko would make him his *****.
regardless of Norton maybe being washed up, this knockout showed the power of Cooney's left hook. A great win for Gerry. Gerry would have become champ had he fought Mike Weaver like they talked about, but he took on Larry Holmes. Similar situation with Haye and the Klitchkos. Haye fought Valuev and got the title, yet had he fought the better Klits he would have lost and never been champion at heavyweight. Gerry should have fought Weaver, stopped him and had a few title defenses which might have helped him maybe edge a decision with Larry.
Yea cause Valuev is a hard hitting heavyweight. Look at his muscles. P4P He is not very strong at all for his size. IMO Holyfield looks like he has stronger muscles in that picture. And Valuev is almost a full foot taller then him. Valuev isn't that impressive. I think Norton would outbox him.
Its actually kind of strange, but standing next to each other, it hardly looks like Valuev has a full foot of height over him. I don't know if photos are deceiving or maybe Holy is standing on something, but still.
Every photo I saw of Adamek and Arreola next to each other before the fight showed Adamek as being noticeably taller, even though Arreola was listed at 6'4 and Adamek at 6'1. :conf
I can't explain it either. My only guess is that perhaps it depends on the angles of the shots, weather or not one man is wearing shoes and maybe the other isn't, or if some of these guy's heights are exaggerated to some degree.
Norton looked pretty ripped ass for a dude washed up at age 36......... No fat on him....... But yes, his chin sucked major weenie...... MR.BILL
