    The late stoppages of Cooney-Norton and Mercer-Morrison can be attributed to one man: Tony Perez. He also let Cooney wail away on a bloodied and blinded Jimmy Young. Not a great track record for one Mr. Perez.

    Damn those final 4 punches on a unprotected head of Norton were truly scary.

    At conclusion of that fight Norton could have borrowed Willie Pastranos phrase when he got Tko'd by Torres, after the ringside doctor asked if he knew where he was, Pastrano said "You're damn right I know where I am, I'm in Madison Square Garden getting the **** kicked out of me!"

    Kinda crazy the odds closed the same for Holmes vs both Ali and Cooney (8-5, IIRC)

    Apparently Ali was known for doing magic tricks outside the ring as a hobby but to somehow convince the bookies that he had any chance at all, as a shot 38year old against a prime Holmes, was his greatest magical trick.

    Yes, and some of the body punches he took off C00ney would have decked many fighters. Holmes was p1ssing blood for a fortnight after the bout.

    I read an excerpt in a book called "Glove Affair" that stated that Jerry Quarry asked Cooney to really beat up Norton because apparently Norton acted crudely toward Jerry's wife after their fight in '74. After Cooney's destruction of Norton, Quarry thanked Gerry.
