Agreed. Gerry is not matching speed with the Big Cat. Neither has terrific punch resistance, but Cleveland was hard to keep down. "In a way he's tougher to fight than Liston because he has the speed the other doesn't have. You can't walk around Cleveland like you can Liston." -Eddie Machen Not hooking with a hooker favors Williams here, I think, as he beats Gerry to the punch. He also carried late round power (three tenth round stoppage wins), was comfortable over the distance, and showed with Terrell he could deal effectively with Gerry's height and reach. Hand speed's the difference here. Big Cat gets there first.
I'm going with Gerry. In addition to significant power, he was also a lot more skilled than most give him credit for along with having a size advantage over Williams - something Cleveland wasn't accustomed to. William's defense was also pretty poor as was his chin.. Neither man was a poster boy for durability, but Big cat was easier to hit flush and Gerry had the better tools for making it happen first... GC - KO 2.
Both guys left some questions unanswered, but Williams has more substance to his resume. He should be favoured here, but not with any great confidence.
Neither guy reached the goal both were groomed for but ****ey won his spurs losing to Holmes a whole lot more than anything big Cat ever did. Williams was launched and relaunched a few times. And by the third time Williams was actually a good ish fighter but by no means knockout puncher at World level. Co0ney made too much money first time around to warrant so many relaunches and so there was undoubtedly more to come from him. Of the two, Co0ney was closer to the real thing.
Here I have to beg to differ. Neither has a great best result by the standards of fighters discussed on this forum, but I would prefer a win over somebody who was a legitimate contender, to a losing effort against anybody. At least the former unequivocally puts you through that threshold.
Williams best win is beating Billy Daniels on points. He was shaken in the first round. Jack Bodell did a better job. Co0ney beat Ken Norton. Yes it was an old Norton but this was right after Norton beat Tex Cobb. I think it tops Williams.
I get you but Williams never knocked out a leading fighter only build up guys on the target practice circuit. Norton was rated at least and beating contenders himself. It's not much but it's more than big Cat.
