I think this is a very interesting match up... You take Gerry ****ey at the peak of his career when he challenged Larry Holmes in a classic fight and gave a very good account of himself against a one of the better heavyweights of all time and you put him against Evander Holyfield at the peak of his career when he faced and was defeated by a different up and coming big man Rid**** Bowe. Would ****ey be able to break down the smaller champion? Do you think Holyfield would be so bold to stand and slug with the big challenger like he did with Bowe? Who takes this one in the end? I think if these two met in their primes it would be a great and competitive fight just like Bowe-Holyfield and Holmes- ****ey. I'd expect ****ey to give Holyfield a lot of trouble with his size and powerful lead hand. I see ****ey having Holyfield in trouble more then once in the early to mid rounds with his body attack. I think ****ey's jab would give the smaller Holyfield a lot of trouble. I see it being dramatic fight with Evander rallying from the brink of defeat to put ****ey on the canvas or maybe even stop him late.Either way I pick Evander to pull it out in the end either by a late TKO/KO or a close decision.
I think C00ney's true prime was circa 1980 before he had that long layoff prior to the Holmes fight. Buy the time he entered the ring with Larry in June of 1982 he had only seen 54 seconds of boxing action in a near two year period.. As for Holyfield, I'll take the one from 1989-1991 as being in his heavyweight prime.. How would the fight play out? I think it would be better than most think. C00ney didn't have an Iron chin but in order to break him down you either had to be a master technician who landed frequently over many rounds, or a big puncher.. And in BOTH cases, better if he was coming back after being off for a while. Evander could crack but he was no bomber like Foreman. He had good boxing skills but not like Holmes. He was durable as hell but could also be hurt and floored. And assuming these guys are at their best, then C00ney won't be sleeping for a year prior to the match. Gerry had a lot power in both hands and a good size advantage over Evander. Holyfield's toughness and elite conditioning is what ultimately wins this fight. But I wouldn't be surprised to see him staggered or even decked once, enroute to either a late stoppage victory or a decision over Gerry..
I think Gerry surprises Evander, and stops him in the fifth. Can't see Evander overcoming that left hook.
Great fight! I see Holy getting c00ney out around the 9th round with a barrage on the ropes. GC has his moments early in the fight but EH was one tough SOB.
Holyfield would be just too much for ****ey, who would be stopped by an accumulation of blows late in the fight.. It would be very similar to the Spinks fight, Holy was just to fast, durable, and skilled to lose to the big oaf..
This is a realistic scenario and I agree. I don't concur with others who feel that C00ney would be dominated and beaten early without showing a heart beat. Even Alex Stewart, Bert Cooper and a faded Pinklon Thomas hung in there for several rounds with a prime Evander and had a few moments where they landed some meaningful shots. I think Gerry can do " at least" as good as those guys did.
Holyfield is one of my favorite fighters if all time. C00ney is all wrong for the real deal. I see Gerry connecting to the body with that tremendous Left hook, and that will lead to a c00ney ko around round 7-8..... Holyfield will brawl, and that will cost him with as much power as Gerry can generate with those heavy left blows.
You pick Coney over Evander, I call you a troll. Holyfield gets shook a few times but ultimately beats the tar out of the big limited lug.
Watch C00ney vs Norton..... I expect better from Holyfield, but this this is how I see it going, it takes C00ney till round 7. Height, weght and Power all go to C00ney.
Evander isn't going anywhere. He'll grit his teeth in there. And he'd be prepared for the guy and would be circling away from the left. But Holyfield won't press on the gas pedal until late in the fight & Gerry goes once he's fatigued. I think it may be like the Spinks fight where ****ey looks like he's doing alright but the pattern of the fight is all Evander. The rounds go by and ****ey gets worse and deteriorates and his window of opportunity is gone. And now it's time for him to absorb 3 minutes of punishment and he doesn't succeed. tko9, ref steps in and waves it off. I think the Duva camp would sign for this fight in a nanosecond. Getting Rappaport and Jones to sign would be a lot more difficult.
