Its too bad Gerry couldn't have developed a better jab which would have been an asset for him. His left hook to the body and head were nothing less then destructive when he found the range. His right hand had some power in it but like his jab never truly developed. Decent footwork and speed, he didn't have a great defense which Holmes, Spinks, and Big George exposed.
Gerry had one of the most devastating left-hooks ever. He stood 6`7' tall and when he bent at the knees and through his left-hook, left uppercuts, it was brutal. George Foreman claimed Gerry punched harder than any fighter he ever faced.
Contrary to popular belief, Gerry C00ney was not just some crude lumbering slugger. He actually had good sound boxing ability with a decent jab, quality footwork,a hard right cross and one of the best left hooks to the body ever. He often opted to charge out of the gate and dispatch an opponent early if he sensed that he could make it a short night's work. But by no means was he unskilled or crude.
Good skills, shortened up on the hook and threw a good left hook to the Head/body and a good right to the body for a one armed puncher. I think the preparation was poor for Gerry fighting just 2 rds in 2 year heading to a title fight with a 15 round Champion. Victor Valle did a good job but Gerry needed to fight past 8 rds before gunning for a title. A guy that had confidence problems should have been secure that he could finish strong. A fight with the durable Tex Cobb may have extended Gerry to a 10-12 round distance with too much harm or risk and would have benefited his confidence and stamina. Also may have been better served fighting Weaver before Holmes and fights with guys like Cobb and a few movers to get him used to going 10-12 rounds
