Even not having seen this Morel fight, my feeling is he should have just hung them up after Lopez. That probably would have been preferable to having a bitter experience like this...going out legitimately with no ifs ands or buts.
tough luck for gerry. well, he could hang them up but if there's a chance that he could fight a big name like montiel or darchinyan, go get it maybe for a one last hurray.
Which fight is it? In his 8 losses of his career 5 of them were split decisions, and 4 of them were in the other guy's hometown. Makes you really suspicious of how many times this guy has been screwed over in his career.
Runners are Gerry's worst nightmares. They trade with him early and find out they can't take him out they get exhauasted.Gerry never had the foot speed to catch these track stars.Specially now with his old legs.
He, Johnson, and Augustus should form a support group. Or better yet, open a boxing club together - you couldn't ask for a more well-rounded pugilistic education.
I remember the Deleon fight, Ponce tried to take Gerry out of there in the 1st round and when he tried to do it again in the 2nd Gerry was countering him to death and even almost knocked him down. From then on, Ponce was running away from Penalosa for the entire fight. It was funny to see Deleon an intimidating huge puncher at the time running away from this small old guy for 10 rounds.
His defining fight was Johnny Gonzalez. That was a great win considering Gerry was coming in as a 3 to 1 underdog.
Penalosa won that fight by landing a well placed shot ("lucky shot " if you will) in a fight he was clearly losing, that's not what is meant by defining fight.:nono
ok so by that logic then, you wouldnt include the following fights as the defining fight for these fighters Castillo to Chico I Taylor to JCC Leonard to Hearns I Marciano to Walcot I and I never heard of a liver punch being a lucky punch before, was Penalosa swinging for the fences with his eyes closed in that one? :huh
It's only called a "lucky shot" when a guy is clearly losing and ends the fight with one punch. Go watch all the above mentioned fights and compare them with Penalos/Gonzalez and you'll see why they are not in the same category!
