Had Gerry not experienced those close losses over in Japan, and he had took on 115lb king Johnny Tapia in the mid-late 90s, how do you see a fight going?
Tapia was far better IMO as well. He'd have been more than a handful for anyone that ever fought at the weight, provided he fought to the best of his ability and didn't get careless against some of the bigger bangers like Galaxy and Moon.
Mi Vida Loca at his best was truly great. He wins a wide UD. Blazing combinations too much for the shell of Gerry.
I was talking prime for prime, but I still agree that Tapia would outwork Penalosa. Tapia was a really under-rated boxer, and his hand-speed was unbelievable. Great combination puncher. Tapia. 8-4.
gerry has a higher chance of winning when his opponent fights toe to toe, and tapia has that style. i'm not saying that gerry will win, but it will be an exciting-full of action fight. not an easy fight for both fighters. i thinks it's too close to call
Tapia is a come forward fighter and Gerry hasn't lost to any come forward fighter. All his loses are against boxers who potshot and run. A very competitive fight . . . Gerry by points.
By the same token, Gerry has never fought a fighter on the level of a prime Johnny Tapia at that weight. The best word to describe him would have been "rapid". He was so athletic, jumping in and out of range throwing 5-6 punch combination's at a time sometimes. He also has very good accuracy, and works to the body well, in addition. He is a skilled brawler, who has shown the ability to box plenty of times. The Danny Romero fight comes to mind. I only see one winner, but Gerry would not be disgraced.
bull****. tapia's style will play a factor in this fight. he ain't a runner like any of the guys who beat penalosa. Tapia also does not have as much advantage in height and reach. It's a 50-50 fight imo.
Tapia's only stoppage loss was from a bodyshot. Penalosa is one of the best bodypunchers of the last few decades. Something to think about at least.
