Am I the only one who thinks that Penalosa was really hard done by the judges in this fight. I'm not saying he won, but no way was the fight as one-sided as those scorecards suggested. I thought Ponce hit a lot of air, and Gerry countered effectively throughout 12 rounds. Opinions?
We are on the same boat . . . my friend. I have a copy of the fight in my collection but after watching it over and over for so many times (even in slowmo) . . . I can't figure out how the judges scorecards came about. It's close and the scorecards doesn't show it.
This was my introduction to Penalosa and he really impressed me with his aura, defense, and technical ability. Great fighter, even if he is at the tail end of his career. I wish him luck in the Lopez fight.
oh absofreakinglutely. i too think he did not win but the judging was just absurd. they were giving de leon the rounds because he was supposed to win anyway. i think there were two shutouts and the other judge gave gerry one round. still, i think gerry owned de leon that night. he made de leon, who was supposed to be a monster, fight on the backfoot and throw pitty-pat punches. not bad for an old man
I have no problem with De Leon winning the fight as I thought it was a close one. Those scorecards were ridiculous... Penalosa is probably one of the best filipino technicians out there and I'm glad he's at least getting some big fights at the tail end of his career.
Well said. I love watching Gerry put his punches together. I'm going to rewatch the Ponce fight in a minute, actually.
penalosa was connecting the accurate punches and snapping de leon's head most of the time. the judges just feel that penalosa didn't do enough that they awarded most of the rounds because of de leon's workrate, though most of the punches hit penalosa's gloves. the score should be much closer imo.
It could be argued that Penalosa lost a close fight, but that scoring was horrendous. That whole card has terrible scoring (JMM vs. MAB and Forbes Vs. D. Hopkins also featured blind judges).
Yeah, the scoring sucked in that fight. Penalosa's a really smooth and graceful boxer, especially on defense, in his prime. I've seen him do some highlight reel quality bobbing and weaving, ducking and slipping of punches, never hitting him once. And he almost never gets trapped on the ropes. You think you got him cornered, and swish.. next thing you know, he's behind you and you're the one trapped on the ropes. He very rarely gets hit flush to the head too. And if he does get hit, he's got a good chin. And I'm not even talking about his offensive skills. The man's combinations, smooth as silk. If only he was blessed with a lankier, bigger frame. He would have been more awesome.
gerry penalosa is the best filipino tactician ever. One of the best defense ever. I have followed his career and I do not remember him ever been knocked out. His losses were mostly majority decisions. His losses to the koreans were mostly due to the hit and run, run, run, jab, run and run tactics. Very frustrating for a boxer who wants to go toe to toe like gerry. And then again, we know what happens to fighters who toe to toe with him. vorapin and gonzales comes to mind. the score in the ponce de leon fight was simply horrendous and was probably done that way to ensure no rematch will be requested. I mean, ponce de leon back pedalled most of the times. and he was the younger, bigger man.
the judges scores were bull. that was a close fight, and a former fly weight showed what a one dimensional fighter ponce de leon is. he was a bit tentative at the outset due to ponce's power. but once he found his rhythm, he started countering and had ponce running in the last round. it was a close fight due to the gerry's tentativeness, but he totally owned the mid to latter half of the fight. i only saw that fight once, and forget who i scored for. but a contested SD was the worst they could give him. i wish my man gerry luck against lopez, and hope he wins. imagine what that would do for his legacy if he somehow pulled that off.
Gerry should had been the winner of that fight. Most of De Leon's punches hit Gerry's arms or gloves while Gerry's mostly were clear hits!:huh
The scoring may have sucked but Deleon won the fight. His body punches and work rate clearly took many of the early rounds. Penalosa countered well in spots but not enough to take a majority of the early rounds. Once Deleon started moving away Gerry's aggression won him the last three, but I didn't think it was enough. I had it 115-113 for PDL and really could have had it 116-112 but gave a close middle round to Gerry. Interesting tactical match, though.
