I just read the article on Gerry Penalosa written by Carlo Pamintuan aka Underdog. Congratulations to Penalosa for his win over Jhonny Gonzalez giving him a record of 52 Wins, 6 Losses, and 2 Draws, and his second title which also makes him a two division champion.

Enough with the stats. What I want to know is that since Penalosa has stuck with boxing for this long and achieved the above mentioned success, has he surpassed Luisito Espinosa as a Filipino boxing figure? Has he achieved the number#2 slot among Filipino boxers in the last 20 years with Manny Pacquiao at #1?

i have an incredibly biased opinion about this. as i have always been a bigger fan of gerry. i am not discounting the victories luisito had. he had good wins against great opponents in the likes of soto and medina along with 5 other fighters in his 7 title defenses. i still feel for him because he wasn't given his due purse and that's why he had to keep fighting even though he was shot to the nth level.

i've always thought that gerry was the better overall fighter, defense, chin, power, skill, speed. i think they were fighting in the same weight, gerry will pick luisito apart.

yep, i agree that penalosa is the better over-all fighter. his advantages over espinosa are chin, defense and a little more power. skill and speed are tied. penalosa was never been knocked downed in his entire career even with the bigger and younger ponce de leon as his opponent (a testament to his defense and chin). espinosa is a little bigger than penalosa so a match between them should be done on a pound for pound basis.

both are two-time world champions in different weight classes but as of now, espinosa still has the greater legacy. espinosa holds then the wbc featherweight belt for 3.5 years having 7 succesful defense against fighters like soto, medina, gonzales and mckinney. penalosa is 35 years old now and probably pulling out his last acts of greatness. if he succesfully defended his title against vorapin, he wants a rematch with de leon or another title at 122, making him a three-time champion in three weight class and thus eclipsing espinosa's legacy.

7 successful title defenses. that says a lot. tho i would rank g-pen SLIGHTLY higher than espinosa pound for pound, my vote still goes to luisito. g-pen hasnt surpassed luisito yet in terms of accomplishment.

and what can you guys say about the soto rematch?

Btw, what ever happened to Gerry's brother, Dodie Boy? I was like 8 years old when I was watching him so I kinda forgot where he went to.
