I know, and that is prevailing wisdom about the weekends fight's in general it seems, but something about me is just guardedly skeptical.
Even if it turns out to be one-sided, I suspect it will have more to do with the winning fighter's performance rather than any deficiencies on the part of the loser. At the very least, I don't see Charlo-Williams being any worse than Charlo-Trout- and I quite enjoyed that match.
He seems on their level. Not quite as athletic as Charlo but more skilled. Not quite as skilled as Lara, but more athletic.
I thought Jermall would steamroll him as I admittedly didn't know much about J-Roc. But I've watched 4 of his fights this week and I'm thoroughly impressed. He has good handspeed, nice footwork, impressive combination-punching ability and a pretty good defense from what I've seen. He's probably the more technical fighter of the 2 as well. I think now it's close to a 50-50 fight . Jermall does hold some physical advantages over him (when they faced up he looked to be a couple inches taller.) Anyway, this is one of the best matches that could be made at JMW- two undefeated fighters square in their primes.
That is the one in which I have the most faith, as far as it being an intriguing clash of styles on a high tier of skill. Chisora vs. Whyte is probably the likeliest to be a FOTY candidate, albeit on a much lower skill tier. I can very easily see Cuellar wiping out a smaller & well-used Mares, Joshua KO1ing Molina, Parker outclassing Ruiz with sheer athleticism using timing & power to negate Andy's speed (all he brings really), Crawford schooling Molina without breaking a sweat or going into 2nd gear, and Lipinets finding Zappavigna's face unmissable en route to a cuts or towel wave TKO, however. Like, very easily.
My only concern with Charlo vs. Williams is that we might find out that most of us either over- or under-shot our estimation of J-Rock, and he proves to be a couple of levels either above or below Charlo depending on which - and in either case it could end up being a boring decision for one guy or the other. If all works out to plan, our read on him was correct meaning he's elite (not a fraud, not a budding ATG - just elite) which places him squarely in the bracket with Charlo and sets it up to be competitive - but I just think we don't quite know exactly how good J-Rock is until after he's fought someone like Charlo.
I mean, his resume is pretty deep for having not graduated to marquee status before tomorrow, but we have seen lots of guys rack up handfuls of best wins comparable to Chia Santana, old Alcine, Twinkle Fingers, El Riel, Lora, and Cuello (and even presumptively Centeno if you want to include him, based on how that one seemed to be headed) but then fizzle on the big stage. I'm big on recognizing the merits of consistently looking good against a slew of B- to B+ opponents and not dismissing that as meaningless (as some do), but also wary of having been stung too many times in the past by apparent stars in the making whose limiting flaws only became obvious in hindsight after they fought somebody top shelf.
