    Toot Toot!

This is captain LeonMcS welcoming you all to Australias next world champeen, fighting live on Fox on Friday night for the IBO Featherweight Title against Mexicos Heriberto Ruiz.

Tickets are free and as we approach our destination of our next world champ I'll be watching this at the Greenwood in what promises to be a barn-burner.

Forgot paying to see N'dou-Hatton or Dawson-Johnson II this weekend and forget Haye-Valuev, which is victim of a blackout, its our very own FREE (pretty much) look at a top World Title bout.

I'll add more later cos I'm half cut but

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

“Action” Jackson Asiku will carry the hopes of two nations on Friday night.

The 31-year-old, born in Uganda and now a resident of Australia, meets Mexican veteran Heriberto Ruiz for the vacant International Boxing Organization featherweight title in a scheduled 12-rounder at Leagues Club in the Sydney suburb of Parramatta.

It’s the first world title try of a nine-year professional career for Asiku, who turned pro in 2000 after representing Uganda in that year’s Summer Olympics in Sydney. He’s since fought 21 of his 28 bouts on Australian soil, including nine times since last losing there.

Overall, he is 25-3 with 13 knockouts.

Ranked in super featherweight, Asiku returns to the 126-pound class where he scored his most significant recent victory – a ninth-round TKO of former IBO champion Gairy St. Clair last April at Challenge Stadium in Perth.

In that fight, he dropped St. Clair twice and scored the stoppage when referee Gary Ingraham halted the proceedings after St. Clair rose for the second time at 2:02 of the ninth.

The win avenged an eight-round decision loss to St. Clair in Sydney in 2003.

Asiku, who spent the summer in Las Vegas working with former IBO welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr., has previously held the Australian, African and Commonwealth titles at 126 pounds, but missed out on a previous IBO title shot when a date with South African Thomas Mashaba fell through.

He is aiming to become the latest in a string of Ugandans to win recognized world championships, following countrymen Ayub Kalule, Cornelius Boza-Edwards, John Mugabi and Kassim Ouma.

Ouma was the most recent of the quartet, winning a title at 154 pounds in 2004 and defending once before losing it nine months later.

“I’m in great shape. The Mayweather camp in the United States was a real boost to my preparations,” Asiku said. “It was a great learning experience to be in the presence of such a superstar. I definitely got some tips that will be of great help in the upcoming fight.”

Ruiz, who turned 32 last month, scored a third-round TKO over Cristobal Teran in August to improve to 42-8-2 in a career that he began as a teenager in 1994.

He was stopped in three rounds by Rafael Marquez in a bid for the IBF title at 118 pounds in 2004, but has since held national and regional titles at bantamweight and super bantamweight.

He is ranked No. 18 at featherweight by the IBO.

    About the IBO
From its inception, the IBO's mandate has been to bring honesty, integrity and trust to boxing. The record shows that it’s been – and continues to be – successful.
That's why world class talent like Lennox Lewis, Wladimir Klitschko, Ricky Hatton, Manny Pacquiao, Chad Dawson and so many others have been proud to wear IBO title belts. And that’s why the IBO's objective, comprehensive computerized rankings remain the most reliable and honest in the sport.

When you associate with the IBO, you send a message to boxing. It's a statement of your commitment to maintaining credibility in the greatest, purest contest of human ability in the world. "The Champion of Integrity" invites you to be part of the revolution

Except for his last fight where he had a draw with Junmar Dulog over 4 rds. But I heard he was sick before that fight.

Top fight. All over it like calomine location. Just hope Ruiz handles feather. It may be too big for him. If not, it's a WAR.

I'l tip you an upset on the under: Flash Villacura over Dean Livanos. Flash hasn't won a fight in his last ten starts. He'l win this. You be the judge because over 4 rds, I'm not expecting any favors from the judges.

edit: was looking forward to being at this show. outside influences prevent my attendance. *sniff* *sniff* LOL

Well he fought at feather last fight out and got the choccies so should be good. TBH PJ you can't bang on too much about the Dulog fight; I mean no disrespect to Junmar who is a warrior and a fighter's fighter, but it is pretty hard to get up for a 4 rounder against him when your previous fight was against a former world champion in a title fight....

Probably true. But I really think Asiku has real problems with south paws. I'm sure prior to the fight, most pundits had it a shut out to Asiku, but Dulog finished over him in rds 3 and 4. Apparently the whole Christian camp was sick with the flu at that time so he probably wasn't up to it physically.

On the south paw thing...remember Olartes dropped Asiku too. So maybe their is something in that.

Phil, Ruiz fought a guy who was 1-22 at his only feather weight fight. Hardly a guide. Corey Brown would have beaten him 5 minutes after winning the Melbourne Cup.

Friday night, hmm? If memory serves from the Tua fight, "main event" time in the Oceanic zone translates to very late the previous night (or very early the same morning, depending on your perspective) EST.

This would be cool to check out if there were means and it was starting at a reasonable hour (a big pot of coffee'll set anything right at 5am or later, as long as it's early to bed on the eve).

Otherwise I'll be looking to you good sirs for a thorough RBR and pics/clips if possible. :good

It's one of the best match ups we have had for a loong time. Like you say, we don't normally get good Mexican fighters down here. Even with the weight disparity, gut feeling says Ruiz will give Asiku hell.
