Fighters can't come out of retirement... and NOT beat the #1 man in the division... and be considered the #1 themselves. That doesn't even make sense. In fact... when Vitali came back, he beat Sam Peter for the WBC title.... Wlad had already beat Sam Peter. How does that leap frog Vitali over Wlad?:think Especially since during Vitali's retirement, Wlad had not only become IBF champ, but had avenged his loss to Brewster, unified with a win over Ibragimov, and had solid defenses over Calvin Brock, and Tony Thompson.... throwing in mandatory thrashing of Ray Austin in the mix as well.

It's simple arithmetic really. Vitali retired as the clear #1 HW in the world - AND - had just beaten the guy who KO'ed Wlad in two rounds. Seeing as Wlad hadn't avenged the Sanders loss and Vitali hadn't taken a loss prior to his retirement, there is plenty of room to argue in favor of Vitali being the #1 HW when he came out of retirement...

It doesn't work like that. Retired fighters have to fight to get their rank back.

I think a fighter that retires a champion should be rewarded all their titles back the second they announce a return.

Vitali didn't beat Byrd, Chageav, Chambers, Thompson, Haye...etc. But Wlad and Povetkin did.

Vitali has the wins over Peter and Adamek, but I think he got a lot of benefit of the doubt in his high standing during his second career.

His resume was far inferior to Wlad's post retirement, but as a fighter he wasn't considered far inferior.

They shared the HW title between them unfortunately for boxing fans.
