well if he was countering you, you should counter him. :D it sounds stupid i know. Do you know how to cut off the ring? Are you faster than him? Do you have more stamina?
Don't try and counter his jab with yours because you won't reach him anyway.
-Try to circle around him than storm in with a double jab and a right hook or a straight right
-Be in range all the time and smother him

You should post a video it would be a lot easier to give you an advice. I think there is a thread on this topic where some guy explains everything. Good luck

You got to use feints and jab to get inside.

    Try doublin the jab.

Well first off you can't just come straight forward, you need to set it up. Keep them busy with the jab, whether or not it's landing or not just keep them thinking. Then try feinting and stepping inside hard; I suggest going for the body since you're shorter and plus body shots are devastating and keeps people honest

    This is good right here...

And on top of this, don't lunge with any punches...

That's just askin for a counter...

Can't just walk in. Got to go behind punches or headmovent, or even better both.

Kinda hard to explain with words, but practice slipping side to side and punching off of it. So as you're moving your head back to the center line after slipping to the right, throw a right hand, or as you're moving back to the center after slipping to teh left, throw a jab or a hook.

Start moving forward from out of rang, slip left, slip right, slip left - left hook.

If you're already smaller than other guy, make yourself smaller still so that you're less of a target and he has to punch down and has more difficulty timing you. Obvious move your head, feint and try jabbing your way inside.

Absolutely head movement is key, head movement and strait punches. If you come in without head movement you'll get lit up. Besides that I find ring control is extremely helpful. Knowing how to "move" your opponent around the ring. Work someone back to the ropes, etc.

Another big thing that helped me is once you have the guy moving strait back thats when you RUSH in fast. Usually if I respond quick enough i can have a guy on the ropes pretty quickly.

Against taller opponents what I like to do is:

    - use footwork to close the distance and get to the point where I'm just a little bit out of his reach.
    - wait for him to jab so that I can time it (I usually keep moving my head so that I don't present a stationary target).
    - As soon as I've got the timing down, I counter his jab by stepping in with either a strong right cross to the body or left hook to the body. Doing this lets me get inside. Once I'm there, I usually elect to let it rip with combos and work his body and head.

There are other ways to get inside as well, but having good footwork and maintaining head movement is a must.

Having some counterpunching skills and being able to throw feints helps too.

This is one of several very good ways:thumbsup.

Makes sense and works with much practice. Its the practice you need to start doing if you are to breach there defense. Then there are feints when you draw a punch from them....but this gets too much to explain in depth.

Have you not got a coach buddy?

true with all of these things you can use them to get inside and be effective, but also since your the shorter fighter, not necesarily the smaller one, u can try to take advantage of angles after you feint him, but depending on your experience, that might be too advanced:think

    Thanks all.
Could any of you suggest workouts to move faster. I can get away easily most of the times but getting close is though cos of my slow head movement and lack of experience. I can count the times i have sparred...7 or 8 :hey

as far as footwork, get some speed jumprope and get to it, everyday, 5 times a day until you get it down. as far as handspeed there are a multitude of things but for me, get resistance tubing shadowboxing equipment and get sum weighted gloves, they will increase hand speed and increase you technique as far as throwing them correctly. and shadowboxing in the pool also if you wanna have some fun

Footwork is very hard and takes alot of work. You need to get someone to show you face to face because there are so many things you could be doing wrong with your feet that needs correcting.

"Moving faster" requires development of the fast twitch (type II muscle fibers). I would not go into the whole I need to move faster stuff yet. Keep working on the fundamentals of boxing, it is probably your boxing mechanics that need improved, not necessarily your foot/hand speed.

I think the bob and weave line is the best thing to train head movement on when you are by yourself, and helps you get under punches. Given that you have sparred only 7 to 8 times, that is not much at all. I was only allowed to do offense/defense drills with partner for awhile. Also, humble yourself and ask your partner(and of course your coach) that you do glove work/sparring with what he sees. Good luck.
