So I been reading about the flack Ortiz has been getting for his no masing at the 6th of a great fight that could've gone either man's way. I saw the fight from the first round to the 6th and prior to watching the fight read that Ortiz just pussed out. I was pleasantly suprise to see that Ortiz was putting his heart on the line all the way through until the end, but decided that today wasn't his night and basically quit, even though the doctor, "stopped the fight". It's fair to say that the dude quit, but you could clearly see had he gone on with that fight he was going to get knocked the **** out after 2 or three more slams. I also noticed that the kid had no answer for those straight rights which Emmanuel Steward noted were doing major damage. It was an interesting set of circumstance I thought, to say the least. I hear how some people say had the kid went on he could've potentially knocked his opponent out, but looking at the fight it was clear that this fight was going to end one way and that was Ortiz on his ass. I found Ortiz pretty admirable and quite the likeable guy afterwards even though he lost. I also find the argument that a punch could change the fight in this case flawed when you consider the following, 1.) you have a fighter who was already resigned to his fate and 2.) you had a situation even if the fighter hadn't felt resigned was still going to end with his ass on the canvas. Anyways, I felt like giving some of my own thoughts, but let's get to the real nitty gritty. What would be worse for a fighters career, him getting knocked out or him quitting in a fight which looks like it's pretty much over? Would the fact that he had the resolution to go even though he went down, would it give him the extra something to help him win the next fight or would the knock out take more out of him then had he quit somewhere down the line? Would him quitting to fight another day be the right thing to do or would it be a hindrance since now he has that shadow over him that he could potentially quit in any fight under these circumstances? Anyways I may not have the slightest idea of either case being a good thing for a young fighter, but I will say this, it is definitely going to be some interesting shyt to see some of Ortiz's next fight down the road, so we can compare him to other fighters that faced similar situations, but ended on their back and see if it was the right thing to do for his career or the end of it.
a champion would have found a way around those rights or learned from them......a champion goes out on his shield.....a champion would have relied on the team he built to take care of the swollen eye and the cut.... a champion would have realized that he knocked the other guy down more than once and why cant he do it again. but thats only if your a true champion
I was at the fight, it seemed that he began to lose his way once it was obvious Maidana wasn't going away after being KD twice in Rd 2. That shot at the very end of the 5th was awesome...and much worse than it appeared on TV. I was lucky to be virtually ringside for this fight. Going back to his corner...and as long as he lasted in the 6th, his body language was that of a guy that didn't want to be there anymore. When he went down in the 6th, he actually waived the fight off with his right glove...but his gloves were at his waist and you couldn't see it on the broadcast....I think Papa mentioned this though in the commentary. He basically quit well before he got to the dr. He was visibly discouraged by not being able to put Maidana away.....and by the punishment he took in the 5th. Maidana also landed a lot of questionable blows behind the head etc. I like Ortiz, but he quit way too easily. That fight could have helped define him in victory or defeat as it was a battle...but he quit. His answers after the fight were no better than his answers in the ring. Talented guy, likeable.......who knows what the future holds for him, I hope redemption. But the "thing" that separates good from great was missing on that night.
i saw ortiz quiting he should box the guy but he belived all the hipe gbp trow at him maidana its a real champ he went down got up and find his way to a victory i see victor ending like vargas
You're right, he had no gameplan after he failed to put Maidana away. He may end like Vargas, but Vargas at one time was legit. Ortiz has a long way to go before he can be compared to Vargas IMO.
quitting is worse diego cried when they stopped floyds assault. I think ortiz still had a chance if he could have used his legs for two rounds because they hurt eachother. when you quick like he did its just over and so is your respect. He turned from the ref. wouldnt look at his oponet, walked away. If that other dude would had slowed down a bit after his killer instinct died out O had a good chance I tho we almost seen a double knockdown too
Diego crying was because he was dissapointed in his performance nad did not want to be stopped. He wanted to finish the fight but his corner stopped it. Ortiz gave up.
did u take the punches ortiz did...have u ever? sometimes in boxing u are just DONE...u don't sit and wait to get ur brain bashed in one last time...he fought hard and just didn't have it in his body at the end...from keyboards this can be criticizzed...unless u have been there then u just don't know
yeah and one more knockdown and he is god...it just wasn't his night...of course he is not vargas but he has the skills
Yeah, I hear you...but with a solid gameplan beyond just expecting to blitz Maidana he wins that fight. Even if he could've boxed behind a solid jab or setup his other shots with a jab, instead of just pawing with it when he bothered...Maidana may never have taken control of the fight. Failure on his part and his corner for sure. No doubt about his skills. But, boxing's a harsh sport......he was going to run into someone tough at some point.....he wasn't prepared.
Please explane. As far as I know neather Gatti of Fretias were killed due to a boxing injury or have signifenct brain damage (Gerald McCLellan).
