hey guys i sparred this guy the other night who is only a few kg's bigger then myself but has massive reach advantage on me. he basically relied on his jab throughout the entire 2 rounds we sparred. i was waiting for the right hand follow up so i could roll it and counter off of it with my own right or perhaps a left hook but the right never followed. he would just double up the jab if he felt like it. i tried catching the jab and sending my own at him which i had sometimes success with especially when i utalised this with a bit of movement. but i was honestly puzzled at this jab. during the later half of the second round i hunkered down low and used my head movement to cut wonder in and cut off the ring, trapping him in the corner i hammered 2 huge right hooks to the body which hurt him badly and as he tried to roll off the ropes i threw a right hand upstairs that landed on the button, our trainer told me to stop and give him a chance to recover but after that he was not moving well at all and if it were the amateurs i feel i would have closed the show as i was never really hurt by his punches (just frustrated) i need help with dealing with his long jab
well sort of. i dno if i kinda just winged it with offense but considering i have my first fight next week i would hate to have something as simple as a long jab trouble me for the first round.. i want to be able to nullify it asap.
iv herd about this. are you supposed to throw it wide and around the outside of his jab? or are you supposd to slip his jab an throw the right up the inside
Slip inside his jab; in the same motion, throw the straight right to the heart. It is a natural counter and, timed right, very damaging. Plus, as you step in with the right hand you get inside. But you have to do it all at once- the slip, the step and the punch.
Head movement! Move to the right (assuming he is orthodox) jab to his solar plexus it will force him out of his jabbing rhythm.
