I'm new to this forum and relatively new to boxing. I want to start competing as an amateur boxing by spring and was hoping I could get some good advice as to where to start so that I'm ready for competition by March. I already hit the heavy bag, speed bag, double end bag, and mitts but I don't know what else to do conditioning wise. I spar around once to twice a week but it's very unorganized and the competition is not very good. I was hoping someone could help me out with a good routine to get started. Thanks.
"I want to start competing as an amateur boxing by spring." My first suggestion: SLOW DOWN! Find a good trainer and let HIM tell you when you're ready. --------------------------------------- Pre-trainer conditioning: Run as much as you can, preferrably in "minimalist" shoes, or even barefoot. (seriously, it's better for the legs) - And don't just do miles. Every other day, do interval sprints. Also run up stairs. Do Plyometrics. (plenty of videos available) This will increase flexibility, speed, and your ability to break down lactic acid. If your legs aren't all they could be, start doing squats. Strong legs are really important. Make sure your jab is a weapon, not just a range-finder. Have someone videotape you "sparring," even if it's against no one, and study your form. The time to stop developing bad habits is RIGHT NOW. Read as much as you can about nutrition, and start watching your diet.
